I finally got around to sanding back the inserts in my front door handles on the BA and painting them. Since I also wanted to change the colour of my manual gear surround and dirink holder, this was the first place to start the experiment.

I had bought some additional inserts from FTG to use for a 'sacrificial' trial run incase it didn't work out.

Three things.

(1) I need to spend more time sanding the things back at the start to get the dried-dogs nose pattern out and

(2) I need to spend more time with the 400 and 1000 grid wet and dry to smooth them out before painting and

(3) I need to get to them with 1000 or 1200 grit wet and dry after painting to smooth them out more.

So with that in mind, here are some initial pics. The colour of the insert is a pretty close match to the dash spurs, even though it doesn't quite look it in the pic. Blame it on the time of day and that the flash went off.

Pics...

I wanted to do it this way to keep the BA handles. Doing the BF handles was an option, but I wasn't that keen on the plastic welding. And to be honest, I've been in two BF's, and the larger inserts seems to move around alot and make noises as if they are very feeble.

This is the first time I have realised that the insert on the front drivers side is longer and of a different shap to the insert on the front passengers side - obvioulsy to accomodate the larger Power Window switch. The rear one's are mirrors of each other.

Yes, but if you take a close look, you'll see in the spine of the door the letters 'BA GT' on the harness boot, and 'BA GT' on the LHS mirror with the temperature sensor.

Well, maybe not so easy to see on the 'WEB' compressed version of the image.

But we're off to a start....

(BTW, if you want the hires versions of any of my images, just give me the name of the image and you're email address and I'll lob them through.)

Yeah, I know mate.

And believe me, I gave it a long hard think.

I've seen BF handles in both a BA and BF and just haven't been that impressed.

And as an aside, everything I do I'm looking for an easy return to 'factory' when done - ICC and brakes excluded.

SUpercheap. Metallic Silver of some brand.

I must warn you, they had about 10 cans there of different silvers, and we thought we matched what was on the cap as close as we could (I took in a dash spur to match it with) but it's not 100%. Only noticeably different if they're side by side though.

(Or if the flash catches one and not the other like in the pics above!)

When I get a chance I'll take a snap of the can and any other details. Might not be until the weekend though. Would pay to remind me too....

Just an update. I was unhappy that that paint came out more metallic than the lid indicated.

I have since gone to a Supercheap and had them spray a few cans and picked one.

I'll try again this weekend and report back.

Gee, that was lazy of me, I never got back to this one.

The paint I ended up being the most happy with was from Supercheap:

Powerplus PK9100: 350G Silver Grey Met.

It now appears that I'll be going down the BF path anyway:
