Hi,
Has anyone had this problem? When I turn on the ignition the "check ABS" indicator lights up, then goes out as I start the car. By the time I get to the end of my street the "check ABS" indicator is solid again and remains so untill I stop the engine. Only trouble is my car doesn't have ABS nor was it ever fitted with ABS?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Gary. :?

I am pretty sure ABS was standard on the EL XR8. I would be pretty surprised if it wasn't.

el XR* should have ABS, one way to check its to look at the fues panel (on the panel above the battery) for a fuse called "ALB", if that has spade connectors under i you have abs.

my old el wagon had the check abs light come on when that fuse went boom.

There is an easier way to tell if you have ABS....

If you have cruise control, you would have all the wiring for ABS, whether it is actually installed or not

Cheers
Chris

Have a look in the engine bay. There will be a black plug level with the exhaust and a cable that goes to the wheel. Unplug that and turn the car on and the ABS light will come on.

Take a wheel off and look at the back....if you see a thing in the back of the disk near the hub then its an ABS rotor and probably got abs.

Look at the back of the suspension setup and there will be a black lead and a small bolt...thats the ABS sensor.

If u hit the brakes on gravel then the car will seem to jump, if it 4 wheel slides and u hit the brakes as hard as u can then its non abs.

look for the modual.

are there 3 lines coming from the master cylinder or 2 and a plug?

There are alot of ways to find it.

Thanks for that,
No! this car is not fitted with ABS. Funny though when I bought it I assumed("assumptions are the mother of all f**k") that it was fitted. When I test drove it I noticed that "check ABS" indicator came up and the rear screen has an ABS sticker on it. Not having driven a car fitted with ABS I didn't know the difference. It wasn't until some weeks later that when I applied the brakes that a slight shudder was felt through the steering column.I removed the front wheels to check the pads and rotors and hey!.....no ABS sensors.I took the car to a local Ford dealer and the mechanic checked.....no ABS. The service guy took the VIN number and checked, no ABS was fitted also no cruise, but SRS airbag was fitted.I can only assume that because it was a NSW police car in the first place that the cops never took up those options?Maybe I should pull that fuse if I can find it...lol :)
Regards,
Gary.

Yeah!, I fond the 40a fuse ALB and pulled it. Started the car , yep "check ABS" lit up.......but remains solid, did not go off as it had done in the past with the fuse in situ.I imagine that because the fuse was pulled, a fault has been detected and "check ABS " stays lit.

Do you know where the fuse would be on a Futura ED?
