Anyone got any experience in aftermarket speedometer setups?
Basically a mates mother has a late-90's/early-00's Peugot 300-something-or-other hatchback thingo (it's green if that helps). And the speedo doesn't work (hasn't for a good 5 years now).
It's been to the local dealer numerous times, had some wiring loom replaced and no change. Basically they're not sure what's wrong with it, and there next step is to import some electronic box from somewhere and install it, but it's a couple of grand.
Car needs to go over the pits now and so requires a working speedo, so old matey has asked me for help... Any ideas? I have seen aftermarket speedometer gauges, but they utilise the factory wiring, which I'm not sure if that's where the fault is, therefore would like a complete new setup - from speed sensor to gauge.

I have a Japanese bike computer in the Cortina, I' mounted the reed switch in the drum housing, and magnet on the axle (lowest ratio)

It gave me all the basics including average speed, max speed etc.

and is pretty 'spot-on' as far as I can tell.

I have been using an Acewell speedo on my Vmax for about 2 years now and it is very accurate .The manufacturer claims it is legal to use it in kitcars, trail bikes and road bikes .iT COMES WITH IT'S OWN WIRING HARNESS though you may have to extend the wiring going to the wheel .It operates much the same as a bicycle computer/speedo except you use 12 volts ignition and an earth wire,a magnet is attached to the wheel and a transducer is mounted to the where ever and bob's your uncle. It is $200-300 depending on model and has tacho, clock ,tripmeter and fuel gauge.and it is blue lcd so you can read it under any light conditions and a free set of steak knives if you buy it now .But seriously a good bit of gear .Cheers Kevman.

I don't see why not? So long as there's a speedo there surely that's adequate, I hope... I don't know what they plan about the odometer though.
Don't know what the dealer has replaced. But whatever they want to try next it's bloody expensive.

Cheers for that Kevman - that one sounds exactly like what we are after...

Found those Acewell setups - http://s3performance.com.au/speedometer ... oms71td7v6

However, doesn't solve the odometer issue though as they only go to 99,9999kms, were car odometers are required to go up to 999,999kms.
