when i upgrade my BEM to one that fades the interior lights, if i replace the interior lights with LED's will they still fade or is there some circuitry i need to build to make it work with LED's?

i reckon they will, the resistor inside the globes reduce the voltage from 12v to 1.5v so any drop will have a dulling effect.

As long as you don't muck with the wiring it should be fine. The ground wire needs to remain the same as the BEM increases resistance on it to fade the lights out. If you just ground it straight to the chassis they won't fade (actually they won't even turn off.)

Juat make sure the led has a resistor so combined it drops 12v.

The EF BEM will dim fine, EL's won't - the LED's stay on very dimly - need to keep a normal globe installed for proper dimming, e.g. the ign key illum.

why does this happen?

do you mean 1 normal globe in the whole car?? or each one you want to dim properly?

I've no idea. I just noticed it when doing my cars - EF BEM would be fine, EL BEM I needed to keep the one normal globe for all the lights to go out properly.
The dimming works by pulse width modulation - not by increasing resistance - when you have the LED's in, you'll notice they'll flicker just before going out.

so have you done a full led conversion before??

what about exterior lighting? not headlights of course.

Really it's a PWM? I didn't know that. Doesn't matter the wiring advice I gave is still correct.

A couple - why is this relevant ??

It does matter actually - depending on the BEM. Someone with an EL BEM reading this will know what to do if problems arise.
Give yourself a pat on the back by all means, and yeah your info is correct - but focus on what the thread is trying to achieve collectively rather than yourself.

That's what my EL did. They stay at full brightness for longer, then quickly flicker out. No bigger, I'd rather the LED light than a dimming out, after I've left the car.

Well, doesn't hurt to post back here, but also realise there are a fair few LED threads, so most things have been covered before, may take a bit of searching, but persevere.

On my fairlane the LED's dim to a certain point, then as they go under a certain voltage they just switch off.

And the talk about keeping at least one globe normal makes sense, I converted all my brake light globes to LED's and noticed my rear window one came on dimly as soon as the ignition turned on.....which meant my cruise control wouldnt work because it thought I had my foot on the brake pedal all the time. Changed that one back to a normal globe, everything works fine now. :)

I had a similar 'issue' with my EL, when I changed everything to LEDs (tail/brake/reverse/indicator), I did notice at night with the ignition on, the brake/tail LEDs were ever so faintly on all the time. However it never caused any issues with cruise control (didn't have the high mount bulb, as I had a spoiler with the LED bar in it too).
