How can you tell if a car's airbag is still operational? If you buy a secondhand car, how do you know if it hasn't gone off and the trim just replaced?

The AIRBAG light should come on, flash a couple of times, and turn off?

If it stays on, theres no power, otherwise you get the error codes. Other than that, take along a socket set and take the airbag out the steering wheel....... Disconnect battery for a while first tho ;)

I'm assessing a cheap EL fairmont that has had numerous run ins with kanga's.

Ah, right - Don't worry about it then. Drop a new airbag into the wheel any time you like. The dash one should be obvious. The AIRBAG light will come on a couple of times over a few seconds when you turn key and start engine. It should turn off entirely after 5 seconds. If this isn't happening then A) go looking up AIRBAG DIAGNOSTICs and B) you CANNOT get a warrant of fitness or whatever you Aussies call it...

Do you think kanga's would set off the airbags? The bonnet is heavily rippled, and the bumper is a bit loose with a bodgy repair. More the bonnet, i wonder?

So if the airbag light flashs a bit when you turn the key to ign the airbag should be okay?

It's supposed to flash when you first start it (so you can see the bulb is working). If it stays on you have a problem, if it goes out then all is good.

when i got my replacement company car it had been in a small side accident before we got it and it had "tested" sticked on the seat airbags dated a while after its build date... so i guess they'd been tested after the accident....

Mate - Just start the bloody car and drive it. If the air bag light flashes off and on in for a second or three and then goes off and stays off, you are sweet. If it starts flashing, or stays on then there is an issue.

http://www.fordmods.com/forums/Airbag-D ... cs-d3.html

Then kick the phuck outa the front - just to the drivers side of the latch would start proceedings. You'll also need to smash around under the dash between drivers knee and window to set off the in car sensor. All of this will need to be done whilst the car is moving forwards with a little speed, turned on and functioning. Even then, you'll have trouble setting the bloody thing off.

You could just try taking a socket set, removing airbag and putting a battery directly to it. This will definitely tell you if the airbag was functional or not. It has the added bonus of showing you how strong a force it would have had.

The airbag light tells me everything is fine. But i do notice the steering column has been worked on, and was loose(?). The car has a decent service history so if it went off it probably would have been replaced.

For years i haven't been looking for an airbag car, but when this car came up i started to think it does make sense to be in one. They are so cheap now there is no excuse.

PMSL haha thats a funny line!!!! :)
where i am, we we 6ft kanga's and god there dumb! so run into your car head lights, I've hit a few, but no airbag went off. I just have a few stress marks in front bar.

even once about 2yrs ago, a school buses pulled out of a street and did not see me, it smashed the drivers side q/tr panel, bummer, and a bit on the bonnet, was doing maybe 40kms and no poppers went off

I wonder if emu's are even more stupid than kangaroos. I had a flock of emu's running along the side of the road recently, and i had just overtaken them, when they sped up and ran right in front of the car. They then kept running up the steep road until they started falling over from exhaustion, and finally ran into the bush.
