I have a nissan rb30 skyline with the same problem. I've herd that it's a common problem with the nissans but never herd of the same with ford. I've owned my nissan for 10 years and it counts one or two k's when it likes and I've clocked 5000k's. If it's analog speedo it could be the reset button on the trip meter not engaging properly or the gears at the odometer are worn.

it usually happens after years of pressing the trip meter reset button while the car is moving ie. odometer turning.
a little cog gets stripped somewhere in the odometer assembly.

a replacememt cog costs about $10 from Fraud.

being an old car is irrelavant... the km helps in judging service intervals help judge fuel distances and economy (for us peps with out trip computers) and you really should have one to see how many kms your done etc etc

Definatly the cogs had the same problem then ended up buying another cluster. Easier than stuffing around inside to much else to break.
