Finalised my design, printed today, ordered 10 white LED dash bulbs from Repco $17 for the ten, + $12 postage cause they don't stock them = $2.90 each - MUCH better than the $10 each Autobarn wanted. Should pick them up Thursday, and I'll install on the w/e. Maybe Friday arvo for the meet Friday evening.

Anyway what you'll want to see....

I had some more lighting than last time, so the pics are taken with a faster (but still slow) 1/30th sec shutter.

Any tips/gotchas for pulling apart the cluster?

I like working like this. Getting feedback keeps me motivated.

if your using paper i suggest overlaying onto your existing faces otherwise it wont light up properly

you need to print otherwise the back of the paper black or in cardboard or thick paper so it wont light through and give the paper-patchy look instead

ive already made mine up but will be getting mine done on el-glow style paper that i have as it'll be a full face lightup.. will post up pix once its done and i get around to it, been 6 months in the making im just lazy.

so if you use the leds on paper i suggest printing invert black on the back of it and overlaying your existing ones as i said otherwise you need to get it printed professionally.

Note that I am using a black 'mask' sheet. behind the picture sheets. Check my pics carefully.

edit: you know EL glow film as a rather short life, before it dims greatly.

Y'know, I had some doubts about this when I first read about it, and saw the first photos.

However, having seen the second set, and the amount of work that's gone into it, I have a feeling this is going to knock our f**k socks off.

My only reservation at the moment is whether LEDs will spread an even light over the dials; LEDs have a pretty unidirectional glow to them, unlike the incandescent bulbs that throw light everywhere.

We shall see! :D

I've got a plan for that too :)

Hoepfully, I get the bulbs/LEDs Thursday, and I'll play that arvo/night.

I've already carefully laid out cut out the prints/masks as a pair. (I finally found our lightbox). Looking at them (from an EF), and comapring to my EL ones, I must say I like the EF ones better.

No night pics yet, still light out, and I'm going back in anyway, as the TC isn't working anymore (looks like it's data line slipped out somewhere along the way).

Must say I'm disappointed with the brightness levels of these LEDs. The camera picks up next to nothing, although to the eye they work ok, just not as bright as I'd hoped.

Plan B for the moment is go back to the original bulbs. And maybe make up some brighter LEDs, with diffusers.

In short, I'm very happy with the daytime view - worth the effort no worries. Just need to sort out some brighter lighting.

edit: heres a digitally enhanced shot, being somewhat closer to what it actually looks like.

It depends how the camera is setup to take pixs of LED globes in dashes. My dad who is a photographer took mine and found it a cahllenge becuase you need to increase the amount of time it takes too take the photo due to the fact there is no light.
