basically my XG has the usual XG problems...

1) the first 3 speeds for aircon are the same, and only setting 4 has any blowing power.

2) the air isnt cool. since condensor (?) has broken

i dont use the aircon (windows down almost all the time). but i do use the windscreen demister.

my question... is there anyway to remove the aircon stuff (compressor, condensor, lines, etc) but leave the windscreen demister operational?

note: its standard Gli spec aircon. not climate/ghia spec

The reason for your fan only working on full is due to the fanspeed resistor being stuffed.

Theres no reason why removing the A/C stuff would effect the operation of the windscreen demister, as long as you do it properly. (ie keep the vacuum lines attached)

You can just leave everything as is, don't use A/C - check out the resistor assy as mentioned.
I'd also suggest fixing the A/C - very effective for demisting.
Windows down on a 35degree plus day is no match for A/C on and windows up.

I had the A/C fail in my EL, and it was impossible to demist without it. A/C is a brilliant dehumidifier, and used for demisting for that reason.
I know in the EF/L V8 supercars thay had to use a front demister just like the rear demister to clear the screens.

Seeing yours is XD based, it may work without A/C, but there must be some inherant design fault with later cars that you definatly need the A/C for demisting.

just updating... im thinking about attempting this removal this upcoming weekend.

i've had a look and have seen that the compressor runs on a seperate belt so removing it wont affect the timing or anything :) and i can also remove the tensioner too :)

i will be removing the air con radiator, condenser and air con lines (the metal ones)

i will be also removing the air con vents... its gonna be part of a new interior of ute.

also the centre fascia will change.. i wanna remove all the air con related switches EXCEPT for a toggle switch to turn demister on and off (constant speed)

what i need to know is, when you change from "demister to head to feet... etc" is that electronically changed? or does twisting the knobs open and shut aircon tubing ports?

i will be vacuum lines, and im pretty sure you will find its default position is on the windscreen, thus meaning u can disconnect all the vacuum lines and it will go to the screen.

oh sweet. basically the (hopeful) end product will be

toggle switch off = off (derrrr haha)

TS on = demister on (cold air setting and full fans [speed on 4])

so would it be hard to run it via toggle switch?
