hey guys, im new round here.
anyway, i was looking at putting an el/ef style dash into my ea.
the el dash has always in my opinion looked alot better, and i think it would look great in an earlier e series.
i was just asking, has anybody on these boards ever succsesfully done the transplant?
i have looked all over the internet for a doco but can find one
any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi.

Yes, both RD and myself have done the conversion, along with a handful of others.

RD and all the others have done the conversion doing a full wiring loom swap from a donor EF or EL, depending on which motor/ignition setup they wanted to use.

I went a different route, and modified an EB harness to work with the EF/EL/NL dash, switches, climate control and instrument cluster etc.

Have a read through our threads as research.

You do need to realise that this is not a weekend job, and will take a fair bit longer to get it done right.

There are no docos that I am aware of, as it would take weeks to prepare one properly and even then it would be impossible to cover every possible scenario.

Cheers
BenJ

Yes, and body looms.

None of the plugs match up to the earlier cars. Even EA- EA11 is different.

yeah, so i will probably buy an el or an ef and do a full transfer.
does anybody have any idea where i could pick up a smashed ef/el?
just another thing, my ea is a 5 speed, and i want to keep it that way, does that mean i will need to find a 5 speed el/ef aswell?

No, you can do the resistor trick on the auto part of the loom, or just find the T5 loom for the car you source.

so changing the body looms, is that going to clash with putting the AU VCT motor in it?

No because you will just pull all the AU loom off the motor and fit the EL loom... Then it will plug straight back into the engine loom, you will however make up a harness to run the VCT and some sort of rpm switch to get it to change over...

I don't know if you'll be able to run the VCT ECU though as the EL dash requires certain pin outs of the EEC-V ECU and I don't know if you'll get them on the VCT one...

Maybe for a question for someone with the VCT pin outs to compare with the EL one... Might even be a different connector?

just a point of interest the ef loom usibng coilpack is a closer match to au i believe compared to el, as it will actuall run an ef motor on au ecu, pig of a thing and will constantly stall etc. but..
