Ok, I recently upgraded my EL XR6 with climate control, part of which meant putting in the high series loom and BEM. Its all working ok.

Just recently I noticed my trip computer is playing up. Basically, when I drive at any speed under around 30km/h, the reading INST L/KM is all over the place, completely random, jumping up to silly amounts like 60-90--anything...but at speeds over around 30km/h it seems fine...

From what I understand, the data line comes from the cluster, so I con-checked that line between the trip and cluster, its good.
The cluster seems to be working ok too...I have even tried another trip computer, but still same fault.
Does anyone have any idea what wold cause this? Its driving me mad because it is causing my average L/KM reading to be higher than it actuallly is.

the line going into the cluster nice and tight? All I can think of is a bad connection...

Yea I'll need to double check all the connections...actually on the trip computer connector, I had to put a thin layer of solder on each pin to thicken them as the plug on the new high series loom was a wee bit loose, and the lighting would sometimes go. That is now fixed...just not sure why its only below 30 that it happens???

when you're doing between 10-30km/hr, reset the AVG Speed counter and ensure that the avg speed reflectts the speed you are travelling. This will prove the VSS is working as it should.

DOnt think so because even if I am letting the car roll around 5 km/h, barely a crawl, it still jumps all over the place..

Waggin, I'll give that a try...never thought of the VSS itself.

Actually, I had thought of that on the way to work this morning...will try it on the way home...! should be a good indication of where the problem lies...

Yeah, I suspect the data line - the factory data line wire also has shielding around it as well, I'd say yours will be same being a Fairmont loom.

Dunno if that could be a factor - I've never had any issues with unshielded lines used instead though . . .

Yea I payed attention to that when installing the new loom...I noticed that it was sheilded on the old one, so I made sure the new one was sheilded...actually, now that you mention it...on the old loom, that wire was routed completely seperate from the others, I had to cut it to get it out because of the way it was loomed...I wonder if its picking up crosstalk, even though its sheilded? As I didnt run it away from the rest....f**k I hope not, I dont fancy pulling the dash out again! maybe I could get away with just pulling it away a bit rather than removing it completely....

OK...Update:

I tried the average speed, its spot on, so the VSS is ok.
I put the dash in diagnostic mode...number 5 (Inst L/KM) and it is reading the same as the trip computer, all over the place at slow speeds...but I noticed on diagnostic number 5, there is the main reading, and another below it, which reads similar values, but has 1 decimal place, and it doesnt go erratic at slow sppeds, it seems to read roughly what the inst l/km really is...does anyone know what this reading is?

I assume this data signal is sent from the ECU? Maybe I might have to try isolating the data line from the rest of the loom?

This has really baffled me !
