that's right, I still have the original rims on my car, it's ex WA highway patrol, and they look nothing like the one's pictured, the description in the quote is what I have.

here's a pic of them http://home.exetel.com.au/waz/car/DSCF2360.JPG

you can still fit those to the back end of your car, just dont fit them to the front end or you will have problems with your steering geometry being out, as the wheels have a different offset.

i tried putting AU steelies on the back of mine just for burnout rims, but the tyre rubbed on the exhaust

yeah the exhaust can rub, the uncles was rubbing on his eb, but that was because an au had run up his a***. there are a few NC shaped ltd and fairlanes getting around with the steelies from aus on the back (bodgy)but they have different rear exhaust sections.
i have also seen an au series 1 in the Brookside car park in brisbane with ea type snowflakes on them. GOD that looks funny, the wheels stick out about an inch from the guards muhuhahahaha.. there also was a yellow (orange for the vic readers) cab au 3 on the gold coast with ef/el type steel wheels on it and dont that look wierd...
