Hey guys im building a turbo motor for my ef falcon just wondering if I should remove the butterflies out of the BBM or better if I leave them??

pull em out, with boost, it sort of negates long and short runners.

im still running them in mine,
it still has more down low throttle responce and mid range torque with them operating then without them.. |

Only thing is that it makes the car sort of doughy to drive under boost if you pull them out. IIRC Troyman still has his in and its making quite decent power at such moderate boost.

Yep just be aware they may work the other way around on boost...
As they rely on vacuum to open.. When there is pressure in manifold... On a dyno we wired them open...

I took mine out because the actuator didnt fit with my nizpro plenum.
Its less laggy than my old AU with BBM which had the runners left in. Same turbo and the rest of the setup is similar. I dont think I'd bother removing them if you were keeping the bbm. Too much effort for not enough gain. |

My dyno chart always shows a slight dip in power at the bbm changeover point (3800rpm I think?), but to be honest it's barely noticeable in driving. This might be a bit more specific to SC vs. turbo, but my tuner recommends keeping the butterflies in as they still really assist with day to day driving, and low down response (which is most important to me!). I think on my vehicle that pulling the butterflies out would result in a smoother power curve and doughier bottom end, but again the tuner believes that with a little time and tinkering, the dip could be smoothed out even with the butterflies in. I'm keeping them! Joe

i have seen them cable tied open at the actuator,
might want to give that a try first and see how your car responds to them open or closed |

IIRC the vacuum source isn't the manifold. It's a while since I looked, but I think the vac line comes from the HVAC vacuum reservoir. Logically it'd need to, as there wouldn't be a huge vac in the manifold at 3800rpm and pedal to the metal in a NA motor.

the vacuum feed is from the manifold and the line to the solinoid has the blue/black one way check valve stoping any boost from interfearing or vacuum leaving the solinoid before the ecu triggers it,
so it will work.. but if its an auto and your at full throttle and dont back off the throttle, once the bbm solinoid drops vacuum it stays on short runners untill the throttle is released and there is no boost and vacuum to switch it back... in saying this if the revs are above 3800 on or after the gear change it dont matter as the rpm is high enough for it to stay on short runners.. in manual its the same deal except every time the throttle is released on gear change the short burst of manifold vacuum switches the runners back to long path untill 3800 rpm where it switches to short runners... |
