if you're gunna rebuild the engine, atleast get the right ECU.
last thing u wanna do is ruin it coz u didnt wanna buy an ECU yet.
stock injectors will only manage about 170-180rwkw and the ECU won't be able to do anything when it comes to boost :/
stock cam is fine though.

Yep, agreed.

If your stock motors ok, spend the rebuild money on ecu/injs and tuning... you can still get 250wkws easilly from a good stock motor on 15psi... all day with a good tune

Yeah, mines totally stock, 220000 kays. Its been on boost for around 6 months now, Ive done a few syd to bris straight runs and heaps of hard driving, its been good. I dont expect too many more kays, but considering what its been coping with it rather amazing.
You need to consider a few things though, make sure the motors in generally good health and odnt over rev it. I try not to go over 5000 rpm, usually keeping it well under, but it still flys even changing at 4000rpm.
I change the oil as soon as it looks dirty, done 7 oil changes in 6 months, but clean oil is why its still alive, and I dont use anything expensive so its like 30 bucks each time- cheap peace of mind.
Tuning is THE most important thing that will keep it alive. Dont bother with the stock ecu/injs/rising rate reg deal, its a band aid fix. Get a decent ecu, big injectors/pump and a VERY good tuner that knows what they are doing and are prepared to spend some quality time getting it perfectly tuned... dont belive the " we can tune it in 2 hours " rubbish. I takes what it takes... time.

Do all that and it'll last you ages... skimp on it and who knows, 6 months, 6 days, 6 hours?

In my ef i have a brand new AU engine in it. plannin on gettin a turbo, but thing i wana know is, will the turbo kill the standard rings and stuff quite quickly? im not planning on running huge boost, prob just in the 8 - 10psi area.
and also CHEF what is the wolf like in regards to tuning?

Wolf is good itm has 3d tuning making it much esier..
I wouldn't rebuild an engine, I'd do what you have done and fit a latter model low kltr engine in there. Maybe thicker head gasget or machine chambers to lower comp alittle..In eather case a "GOOD TUNE" will run on almost any compression...
I can get AU engines for $800 to $1200 the AU we bought the rockers & under valve cover is like new, for $1000 / $1200 with full accessaries..
This is the AU engine being built up with manual/ turbo..

.
The turbo sits as high as the std throttle body..Its getting a box welded over lower manifold with maybe two throttle bodies for even distribution...

gcsxr6, the standard EF ECU will not work with a turbo, just about any other model will apart from the AU's. The cost of an installed and tuned ECU isn’t all that much, and well worth it. Saying that, get it tuned by the right person. I had mine tuned by a "professional" and within 2 two weeks it had blown the head gasket and broken the ring lands on number 1 and 6. And that was only on 8psi. Its amazing what a bit of detonation can do. New head gasket and re tuned by Rank Rotary and it can run on 16 PSI with no detonation and no damage to the head gasket. I’ve had a lot of detonation from stuffing around with the standard ecu, and poor tuning, and haven’t managed to brake the rings, so I wouldn’t be all that worry about them.
Like Chef said, get an ECU Injectors, fuel pump.
Possible the best thing to do with the engine, to save some money for the above items is to run with a ED bottom end, they run 8.8-1 compression. You will be running around 9.3-1 with the EF and higher on an AU motor.

Good luck, keep us posted.
Cheers

i think the ED motor is 9:1 conpression, only EA had 8.8:1.
ef copped 9.3:1

Unfortunatly, the rings will wear out on high boost if the motor has plenty of kays on it. The rings gave heaps of blow by on my EA, but that was a result of lots of boost and 300 thous kays.
The ED motors done 200plus kays and now that Ive being giving it 15 to 20 psi, its starting to get blow by... not heaps, but it puffs alittle at idle after a good flogging.
If I only ever ran 10psi it would be fine, but thats not why I have this car.

Decomped AU motor is a nice idea, I'll most likely do this when the ED motor dies... would be nice to see 300wkws from a dead stock ED motor

plans have kinda changed but not much. still going to run ed pistons but forged, custom plenum with two extra injectors to compensate for lack of fuel. ecu is still a drama not sure on what to go for. i have been told piggy back ecus are a lot more programmable than standard but not too sure if it will be sufficient any help will be appreciated

if your that worried about the fuel and the ECU etc you could just go dedicated LPG... no ecu and no need for an emissions report for engineering...
but if you wanna stay petrol then get a Wolf 3d
http://www.wolfems.com/home
with a decent set of injectors and an aftermarket computer you will see better results then using 2 extras and a piggyback ecu
how would you get even spread from the extra 2 ???
hope that helps
cheers
