Hey Guys, I am swaying away from a XR8 and considering getting myself into a V8 Ghia instead, simply for the reason that they are far more luxurious and far cheaper and still have the beautiful sound from the Windsor.

However what does concern me is what would appear like being severly underpowered. From what I have read they do have the GT40P heads just like the XR8's so what is the difference exactly between the two, and what would be the approximate cost to bring it up to approx 220kw+? Does the Ghia also run a 3.45lsd?

the biggest problem with the 175's is the cam.
good heads/good manifold but torque cam.

cam change is a pain with a 5L, cam's don't cost much so if u can do it yourself, then it'd be worth it, but if you have to pay someone else to do it then its a costly exercise.

Exactly how expensive is a cam to fit? Probably best of doing abit of head work while your at it I guess. I was looking at a Crane 2030 if I was to go ahead with the Windsor option. Also does the 175kw motor have the explorer intake manifold & 3.45 diff?

Just so I have any idea, what would you guys pay for a 1998 AU1 Fairmont Ghia 5ltr. Bone stock standard. Exterior VGC, interior mint, 99,000kms. Log Books. Owned by a grandpa. Black Leather, tow bar, no sunroof though. He's asking 10k. I was thinking around 8k?

Hey Mate,

I've got the stock 175KW AU engine in my LTD and recently went for a Wade Cam, roller rockers and pacemakers and went from 130RWKW to 170RWKW. There's lots of power to be had on these engines.

Speak to Crescent Motorsport Liverpool - they did my work (02) 9600 6229

I would try and get him down towards $8k as much as possible; you can never tell with cars, sometimes you get lucky and they will drop or he might be content to chill and see if he can get the $10k.

It would want to be super tidy for $10K. I got my 2001 LTD for $16K back in 2006. AUII (2 spot brakes, and ability to bolt on BA-BF brakes!), Sat Nav, Sunroof - all the LTD goodies :)

OK Thanks for all the input. 40rwkw increase on basic mods and standard ecu is quite promising....

He has come down to looking at offers around 8500 but I still think thats abit too much. I think ill aim for 7500.

Hi mate,

I actually ended up purchasing the Ghia for $7600 and very happy with it, but definetely want to get it sounding / feeling more like a 8.

I hope you dont mind me asking but what did ballpark did you pay for the Cam / headers / rockers? Also did you decide to go with competitition extractors or the Tri-Y's? Did they source the wade cam or was that your choice? Everyone keeps telling me it's expensive to change the cam on the Windsors and I'm just trying to get a idea of what I would be looking at. I'm in sydney aswell and would probably get my work done by cresent.

I too have a Ghia V8 (99 fairlane) and am extremly interested in pricing as well. I am having a new exhaust fitted sometime next week, so it should start sounding like an 8.
