Hello,

I have a 351 sitting in my shed, and an AU3 Sedan sitting next to it, and it has got me wondering, would the 351 fit into the engine bay of the AU Sedan?

I am not sure if it is a Windsor or a Cleveland 351.

The car is already running Tickford LPG, so that is the fuel side covered.

I am wondering how big of a task would it be to make it fit and get it running?

Any advice/pointers would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Holocaust

well windsor or clevo doesnt realy matter,

Being a au you already have quite a bit of clearnece down near the k frame for headers etc, which will need to be costume made. off the shelf AU V8 engine mounts will work fine too.

So im assuming you would wana run it on straight gas, so thats easy enough done, most LPG places could steer you on a nice simple set up for that

Gearbox wise what where you thinking?

Costume made headers hey. If it is a clevo I think you could get away with off the shelf headers.
A clevo would be a easier fit as they are exactly the same as a 302 windsor in the mounting points and bellhousing but the top of the inlet manifold sits lower than a 351 windsor.
Being a AUIII you have the high series bonnet to give you more room also.

Ok, here is the go with what you would like to do.

If it is a clevo or windsor 351, you will need to get custom headers made for the following reasons-

1. clevo's were never fitted to AU's, et-to no-one like pacie or genie make them.

2. 351 windsors have a 1/2" taller block height (also called "deck height") than the 302 windsors, and although they use the same heads, there is a chance the 302 headers will foul on steering shafts/strut towers, suspension or tranny somewhere.

If it is a clevo, you will need to engineer it, as clevo's were not a standard fit into AU. You might sneak away with not doing the engineering it if is a windsor 351.

best way to tell them apart (clevo/windsor) is the clevo has the thermostat housing bolts into the block, windsors bolt onto the inlet manifold.

Front springs will have to upgraded to custom made ones (not the AU v8 springs, as the windsor weighs less than a clevo).

Just watch your bonnet clearance too if it is a 351 windsor, since the deck height is taller, then anything on top of the engine will too, by about 3/8".

Best of luck

Chris

The tickford LPG does not mean the fuel side is covered...the LPG EEC also controls ignition which of course is only good for six cylinders and the fuel calibration will be all wrong for the V8.

Either 351 will work.
351C headers for an X-series are likley to fit with minimal mods...I know this from a 351C equipped EF which required only mods to one pipe to fit. I also know that XR-Y 351W type tri-y pacemakers will fit straight into E-series Falcons so it stands to reason they'll fit an AU.
All smallblock engine mount positions and bellhousing patterns are identical it's just deck height that varies.
302 = 8.2" 351C = 9.2" 351W = 9.5".

Notwithstanding the deck height issue a 351W will be easier especially if you have a 5.0 donor car.
This is because everything that bolts onto the 302 will bolt onto the 351 with the basic exceptions of; lower intake, CID sensor, Harmonic balancer, sump. The original 5.0 EECV will run either engine quite nicely.
