Can anyone tell me why I can't or shouldn't consider putting 400m crank & rods in my 351W ?
the 4" crank stroke & rods will give me close enough to 408 on a std bore by my reckoning. :?:

Check the main journal size?? 351W are 3" mains..
The price of quality rotating parts these days ??
Is it really worth it ??

well am reading the Ford high performance parts interchange bible, and the 351w & 400m main & rod sizes are for all intents & purposes the same size-both cr  anks & rods are made outta the same materials and capable to 65-6800 rpm in std form. That said there has got to be enough F series trucks out there with 400m's in 'em to pick one up cheap enough to make my own stroker. Bore the block 0.030' = 408 cu in.

I would leave the block as close as possible to std.....no more than 020". When running high compression, a nice thick bore wall is good.

This is about as old school as stroking gets. Back in the day, this was the only way to stroke a 351W (with or without offset-grinding for just over or just under 400ci). As above, nowadays is it going to be any cheaper than an off-the-shelf kit which comes complete with crank, rods and pistons?

351W and 351M/400C have the same 3" mains.
The 400 crank needs it's counterweights turned down to fit in the crankcase which means mallory metal for balancing which means $$$.
You can't use 400 rods which are 6.58" long because you'll end up with a piston with a comp height of only .92" and besides they use a bigblock pin diameter which will need bushing down to use a small block pin all to fit a piston you can't get.....May as well buy an aftermarket kit instead.
The lowest cost way for more cubes in a 351W is a 392 kit which uses the stock rods and 302 pistons with a 3.85" stroke crank.

Thanks XR9, thats what I needed to know....in fairness it did seem a bit too simple. If it was that easy everyone would be on too it. Thanks

That is an old school mod. If memory serves me the original mod had 400 crank with the c/weights machined down, crank snout modified to fit the Windsor pulley/harmonic balancer, chrysler V8 rods ( that's right not a typo ) and chev pistons. I wish I could remember which. The yanks were getting up to 428 cubes with boring and honing. Nowaday with all the clevo gear around it would be easy to surpass the achievements from the '90's. If you are interested let me know how you go cause I haven't seen anyone go that way for sometime. One point I should make, is that such a motor would be a torque monster which seems to be what is required on something like an 'Effie', rather than a fast spinning drag motor.
