hi all,

i have a 97 EL xr8 and its not a happy car at the moment!

the problem is that it is back fireing! only above 2500+ RPM or from start up when its cold!

i have given it a service as it is about due for one any ways, so i did the usual, oil, spark plugs (i thought they were dirty and might be the reason! but they are not!) leads, i put a tank of the premium unleaded through with injector cleaner (incase there was gunk in there) but it is still running like a dog!

the car runs great while i am driving like a granny and take like 4km of road to get to 60km/h (not fun) has any one got any ideas for me to look for before i have to take it to some one!

thanks guys any help would be great!

Could be ignition, pull the dizzy cap off and check the rotor button.
Thats the most likely candidate for a weak spark but still running ignition problem.
Cheap and easy to replace, get cap and rotor together.

mass air flow meter, bolted on the airbox youll need to take the two trox screws off and pull sensor out and becareful not to destroy the hotwire on the end then spray some carby cleaner on the hotwire to get the dirt off then fit it back in place

Could be your coil. Had same sort of symtoms on ebxr8 turned out to be the coil.

Backfiring through the airbox?

That's usually a lean mixture symptom. Clean the MAF wires (DON'T touch them!) with electrical contact cleaner spray.

Have you changed the fuel filter? Same thing happened to me a few years back due to very low fuel pressure caused by a blocked filter. Ford said it was the MAF...

Good luck, Mike

I would be looking at MAF, then fuel filter, then fuel pump, and finally TFI module in that order.
Cheers

hey all thanks for the above ideas and info! but unfortunatlly the car died on me last night! i was headding down to the shops and it gave 2 large back fires out the back...... i immediatelly took my foot off the accelerator..... seemed to come good put light pressure to the accelerator same thing again a few bangs then  she died!!!

i tried turning her over but wouldnt fire!

dad towed me home,

we checked the fuel filter (clear as a whistle) and pump (squirted about 1/2 ltr in 10sec) cleaned MAF (looked fine) pleanty of spark (tested it on the body, pleanty of spark as they are new, and they wernt wet)

tried using aero start just for kicks didnt even want a bar of it!

its now at the mechanics! so im thinking it must be electrical maybe the injectors aren't opening or something like that!??

anyways thought id keep you informed! lol i'll hopefully find out soon whats wrong and how much it'll cost! damb it!! lol

thanks for your ideas guys.

Can you easily tell how good your spark is just by looking at it though?

edit. You may have shat your crank angle sensor? My old futura did the same kinda thing (Tho it was a 6cyl) and it was the sensor. Had spark and all things neccesary to run the engine but it wouldn't fire.
