hay all newbie here

i got myself a 98 EL XR8

now sometimes it struggles to start for example it goes

tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick etc etc etc etc

now for a 2nd attempt maybe tick once then start...

now i dont have that much mech knowledge

i have looked at battery seems fine/its got new leads and plugs

could it be i need a new coil/dizzy or maybe a starter motor...

it doesnt do it all the time.. it might just start after 1 or 2 ticks for 3 days then one day it might take 3-4 goes to get it to start. mmmmmmm

any ideas ???? :?

LOL, hard to say with that description but perhaps the battery is not pumping out enough current or the starter motor may be struggling.

I'd say the battery is on its way out

and what was it ????

we put volt gauge on the battery and alternator and both are getting a good reading... sounds like its going to be a starter motor...

While you're thinking about the starter motor, check that all the leads are securely plugged into the starter motor properly as that may be a reason for the starting problem.

Sounds like low voltage to the starter solenoid causing it to make the ticking sound. What happens is the solenoid closes and sends power to the starter. The starter motor draws too much current and the voltage drops. This causes the solenoid to open. This then takes away the load from the starter so the solenoid now has enough power to close again. And the cycle repeats, and you get a fast clicking sound.

Now you need to find the cause of the low voltage. First I'd get a battery load test done by a sparkie, and have him check the alternator output at the same time. If the battery and alternator is OK, it's probably the starter motor. Could also be a bad earth or battery cables.

My guess is starter relay.
Swap it with one of the other sames ones and see if it still does it.

Perhaps the ISC needs a look at or maybe you've knocked the MAF plug off??
