my TPS has brass collars, you can't elongate them at all.

The fact that it gets worse as it gets warmer sounds like something electrical; breaking down due to heat = higher resistance. Common faults are ignition coil and the module on the distributor (having a beer, forgot what it's called), the TCI or something.
