Make sure you can hear an au v8 start up cold to hear any knocks, rattles in the motor, also make sure the trans selects gears correctly and doesnt take too long doing it.Rust in the boot strut support area is common, they are about the only common probs i know of,apart from that they are nice to drive and go quite well with a coupla simple mods, exhaust, cai, etc.The s1 v8 forte i just sold ran 14.9 and was only 175kw and put out 196bhp.

Hey I own a ford so Im not trying to swing anyone over the fence into holden camp, but we all work hard to earn our $$$ and I personally wouldnt hessitate buying a LS1 over any windsor V8. Until the BA arrived the Windsor V8 was never a match for the LS1

Ive owned both and know first hand. The windsor sounds nice and has a nice bottom/mid range but it runs out of puff real quick and the LS1 will really torture you in a sprint where revs and top end power rule.

A mail edit in a LS1 will yield 20-40rwkw with no other mods. thats around 260-280kw at the motor and an easy mid to high 13 quarter.

Any computer mods on the Windsor gets sweet bugger all, I know I had it done to both. You would be popping champagne bottles if you pulled a 14.5 in the old Windsor (with just electronic tune).

For the same cash outlay, I say your mad to buy a Windsor over the LS1, its like picking aussie joe buggner to beat Lennox Lewis in the ring.

There are other considerations but V8 buyers are about grunt, not how plush the seats are.

Comparing apples with oranges,48 cubes difference in engine size isnt really a fair comparison. The minimum ls1 comes out with is 220 kw and the max a 5.0 windsor ever got is 220 so why bohter comparing them.

the reason im comparing them is because the author of this thread wants to buy an XR AU. Im saying for the same money grab a VT2 VX SS. As you have said comparing apples with oranges but for the same money.

So the LS1 is the clear winner?

Hi EB V8.

No question LS1 is a good donk, but VT2s and VXs are s**t with mac struts and a s**t trailing arm IRS. Oh wait... VP-VZ, sorry
If all he was looking for in a car was the ability to do skids and go fast, I would have no qualms recommending the VT or VX.
And hes just stated hes a die hard one eyed ford fan (whether I agree with that or not doesnt matter), so let it sliiiiiiiide bro.

s**t i better race down the bottle shop and grab me mate some champagne who just ran a 14.3 in his AU 220 with only exhaust and minor intake mods, full street trim on 19" tyres with no tune.

Also i agree completely with "green car", your comparing a 346ci to a 302ci in terms of performance. Lets stroke the 302 to 347 and then see what happens, or even de-stroke the LS1 dow to a 302, im sure i know which one will have the upper hand.

Who is EB V8?

Anyhow what do you think my XR6T will run with 280rwkw 4 speed auto, bigger intercooler? running 14psi tappering off to 12psi? 12.5?

My last dyno said 280rwkw but since then i have better intake, pulled the 20s off and put 18s on. Also the 280rwkw was after the car was tuned for a whole day, had massive heat. I reckon its good for a bit more, hoping 300rwkw.

By the way who is that guy saying destroke the ls1 or stroke the windsor. but thats a few thousand dollars later, im talking about the same cash outlay, you can either buy a 346ci Ls1 or a 302ci (baby V8)

The Ls1 is clearly better for the same cash. come on..

Not really, look at what you are getting for your money. By a generous 50,000k's it'd have a very thirsty oil consumption problem due to the piston slap problem, this consumption would be similar to that of a 302 windsor at about 250,000k's.
Obvious reapir for this is to re-machine bores (properly) and re-ring, which isnt relatively cheap, expensive enough to put the windsor in front in terms of being "better for same cash".
A mate of mines VY SS had excessive oil consumption problems since approx 30,000k's, well at least thats when it was noticed.
Now i'm not being a one-eyed ford fan, i think the LS1 would obviously be better value for money if the build quality was much better, i think they just wanted to pump em out there and make the big numbers as quick as they could.
Its really obvious isnt it, yeah there cheaper, coz there built cheaper, you get what you pay for IMO.

My WH statesman 5.7 had a bit of an oil consuption problem. Was good off the mark, pulled a 14.9 (standard, spare wheel and 135kg driver) and wasn't too bad of a car.

At startup it rattled like it had a rattlesnake (would go away in 3 mins) but after that it . It would use a litre of oil after 2000km's, a bit much for a 5 year old series 2 car, so i got rid of it.

Just a shame the build quality of the motor didn't match the power outputs.

Thats all a myth about piston slap, oil consumption. probably 1 car in a hundred or a thousand cars. Ive had a LS1 never burnt one drop of oil, plenty of my mates have Ls1s they rev the nuts off them allthe time, go on long trips, no oil consumption. My brother in law did 100,000km in his, never noticed any oil consumption. Not doubting that there are obvious poor examples out there but your more chance being hit by lightening than finding one. In saying that I had a windsor V8, after 50,000km, I had to recondition the head as the valves were buggered, one fuel injector went, water pump blew out, radiator blew out. They have their issues too.

all in all, im sure both camps have crooked examples but all in all LS1 much better buy
