how strong does it need to be????

borg warner 4 speed was used on xb gt onwards v8 powered falcons

73 xb and previous models used toploader 28 spline box, xy gtho used close ratio 31 spline toploader box....

there is a list in order from weakest to strongest, and then they can be beefed up as well if you need to...

depends on what power you making and how much taction you got!!!

i had a borg warner 4 speed manual in my zj fairlane 351, blew 4 of the weak bastards, the front bearing gets really noisy too, but i believe there is a v8 singlerail which can handle around 400hp...

Any box can be destroyed if you are abusive enough i.e. toploader

Plenty of manuals out there, I wouldn't go a single rail unless it was cheap, and if you do, find a XD/XE close ratio, first gear is way to high (100kmh+) but can handle a little bit more abuse.

If you can only afford a 4 speed, go Toploader and best with a aftermarket shifter.

T5's are normally a little weak, there is a few special ones out there but why bother looking when there is much stronger gearboxes available, but in saying this "EBXR8380" drove around cautiously for a while using his original T5 and I know of others behind Clevelands that lived longer than the Clevelands did.

Tremec TKO would be the bees knees in 5 speeds (ask "EBXR8380" ).

Then there is the Supra gearboxes, talk to Mal Wood about them as there is a few different types.

Hey why not a 6 speed, BorgWarner/Tremec T56 (Falcon/Commonwhore), Getrag ? (Supra and others) and ZF ? (VN Group A and others), all worthy of a conversion.

Off topic, in 94 I was quoted $18,000+ retail (at Rockhampton's GMH dealer) for a ZF 6 speed out of a VN Group A, some years later Mal Wood purchased those 6 speeds from HSV and was selling them for around $3500 from memory.

They give Borg Warner 4 speed single rails away around here! Got one for free for the VJ 265.

Try a serch on ebay for tremec. There is a company selling new gearboxes out of the ba's. Ford ordered to many and then wen't to the t56. YOU WILL NEED A ADAPTOR.
