Comparo of the 302 Windsor and a quad cam 4.6L (note the 5.4L is bigger again)

Image

The big heads make it very wide, and the intake/plenum on our BOSSes make them tall as well.

Love the setup in the xe wagon, but same setup in an xh ute would be unique and a bloody awsome

The 4.6 is all alloy, so not so bad.

Our 5.4's are iron block.

yeh i was going more retro style, like fitting the BA/BF 5.4 if that makes sense, want a big V8 so 4.6 doesnt really appeal to me.

if 5.4 was out of question i would probs stroke a 302 or a 351 and go fuel injected....

but yeh 5.4 boss seemed good idea cause it would be pretty much the only one and totaly unique, whee as half the v8 ute going round have 302 or 347's

Actually mod motors are relatively light and 4.6's are mostly iron blocked. They are also very short(small bore spacing) which means less weight forward. Even the V10 which is really a 5.4 with two more cylinders is shorter than 5.0 when all the accessories are included in the measurements.

well according to the ford motorsport catalogue dimensions the 4.6 measures 28" long compared to 27.5" for the 302/351 probably because of all the crap on the front for the cams

interesting also that a 4.6 is 29 7/8 high compared to 302 20 3/4 and 351 23 3/4 thats a lot of weight up high where you dont want it

i read somewhere that a 5.4 was nearly 100kg,s heavier than a 302 and thats with cast heads on the 302 ?

its quite interesting when you compare those physical dimensions

yeh is interesting and makes sense why a modern Ba v8 hasnt been pu into many e-series or older cars...

just dont really want a go the 302 or 347 cause everyone has them in their e-series anyway.....

maybe stroked 351 might be the way to go....

its food for thought as you could probably build a strong 408 windsor for a similar price as a second hand 5.4 .....just be a bit of expense to get some decent heads that flow enough

I just measured the 5.4 in my Super pursuit, it's 24" long
The 6.8 is about the same as the 5.0 at 28" long.
These measurements are from the rearmost point(heads on the modulars, bellhousing face on 5.0) and to the foremost point(the waterpump snout) on all engines.
Also note that they leave out the intake on the smallblocks..it's actually more like 28" high with the 5.0 HO intake.
It's pretty hard to beat a 5.0 for mass(about 470lbs)but the problem with smallblocks in the accessories are in front of the heads and high up whereas the modulars are low mounted and set back behind the front cover of the engine. Couple that to the small bore spacing it means the weight is well setback. If your only doing it to be "different"...don't. Simply, it isn't that different...there are more of these conversions around than you think. I reckon a tough 390+ inch windsor or cleveland is an excellent way to go although I think you'll find it will be at least as expensive, in fact more expensive. But power ain't cheap.
BTW I have a CHI headed cleveland you can have for $5k.

yeh very good info.!

yeh was going for the BA conversion for somethign different but as you said, probs not best idea...

i still way off even starting this project (like years), but thanks for the offer anyways...

altho was liking the idea of the BA dash as all that.. but i suppose a few custom gaudges with a bit of polished metal here and there wont be too bad.

what joints would i be looks at for buying all my motor parts and that sort of stuff, cause would probs wanna build it up my self...
