I've been doing a bit of window shopping lately and have been looking at blocks. I've noticed that a couple of options for bore size are available. 4.000" and 4.125". Why do we have the option and how should we know what we want?

Chad

Oversize = extra cubes.
But will need oversized pistons to match.

Yeah, been looking at Dart blocks. If I were to go for a 347 rotating assembly, then what would the capacity increase between the 4 and 4.125 bore be?

4.00 bore = 342ci
4.125 bore = 363ci

The other benefit with the bigger bore is it will unshroud the valves for a better flow area. Would work well with a boss/clevo/CHI head.
Also, you can use a different bore/stroke ratio to make the power at a different rev range.
eg - 4.125 bore x 3.25 stroke is still 347 cubes, but the shorter stroke will mean the engine will rpm better, but make a bit less torque. Or you can stay with the 3.4 stroke and make a big cube stump puller.
SRP/JE and a few others make a good piston to suit these combos, so custom is not reqd. :D

Or you could go with a 4 inch stroker crank and go a bit bigger, 402 cubes 8-) .

Looking locally and overseas? Any good prices?

I'll be building a stroker soonish too, just not in a ford.

Not in an 8.2" deck block you can't.

I've been looking overseas. With the way the $ is, you'd be silly not to. With the block though, I haven't yet looked at freight and duty. This will probably bring things on par with local prices.

Of course but with after market, for $170 more you can go 8.7" and for $340 more you can go 9.2" as well, not much more when you consider the price the whole lot is going to slug you.

I've had alook a few months ago too, prices were good then, though When I was looking over, I managed to find 408 cube Mopar motors cheaper than 347-363, and not having to deal with EFI accesories on top, kinda made my decision for me.

Will be good to see how she goes Chad, just browsing or serious plans if you dont mind me asking?

I'm just browsing at the moment, but if I can get a few more swings out here then it'll be up for some very serious consideration.

thanks heaps for asking that question scaffy, saved me typing it out :)
im looking down the same path as you and had the same question.

i was looking at a ford racing 347 short block for about 5 grand already assembeld with the 302boss block but then i found that block for about $1200- $1400 and jegs have the scat 347 stroker kit for about $1200, thats us dollar, plus freight and taxes and some labour and should still come in under $5000.
when looking at aftermarket blocks i was surprised how cheap they are in the states.
do you have any idea how much freight would be on a block?

like you, im just weighing up options atm.

I think you may find you'll have issues with the boss 302 block and 347 roatating assembly. I think it was ozrunner who pointed it out in my thread. It may pay to go and have a look through and see if you can find it. Unless someone wishes to go through it all again here. I don't remember the ins and outs of it all...
