Just bought a V8 '1997 EL Fairmont Ghia' and noticed that steering is very soft and feels like there is no resistance at all even the car is stationary. The car steers as normal to left and right and seems to have no problem at all.

Does anyone out there had this same kind of problem? or is this normal with EL Fairmont Ghia fitted with V8 motor?

Is there a way to adjust the feel?

Thanking all in advance.

You have just discovered the joy of Speed Sensitive Power Steering! This is a feature that was fitted to the EL Fairmont Ghia's. At low speeds its very easy to turn and at higher speeds, the steering will firm up.

Yes... Welcome to the Speed Sensitive Power Steering Club.

As Vic said, at low speeds the steering feel is very light and progressively firms up. At 120km/h its at its maximum firm feeling, which is basically the same as normal stock steering.

It does take a getting used to, but after a week or so, u'd realised you cant live without it after you get into a car with normal p/steer. I find it nicer to drive, as you can control the car at any speeds with one hand.

But if you really want to disable it, the only way I know of is to disconnect the plug in the engine bay.
