OK here is the deal I've had countless tanks of fuel now since my tune and I get about 500-515kms before the red light comes on.
Its normally almost exactly 515kms before it comes on within about 1km either way.
Anyway my driving is pretty much the same all the time which explains the consitency but I've run the air con for about 200kms of the last tank and I still got 514.4kms before the light came on for the first time?

Is this standard with tuned cars that they get the same Ks per tank with consistant driving whether or not the air con is in use? I thought I'd lose about 50kms to the tank but it wasn't to be.

Anyone know why? :?:

When I did a run up to QLD from Syd, I got better economy with the aircon than without. Having the windows down obviously has significant drag. I got 720km's from a tank on my std EF 5ltr before the red light, with T5, 3.23 rear end. Now Im lucky if I get 400km's, however most of it is mixed with a top speed of 80kph, but if I do the same trip on the motorways, I can get almost 500km. Current combo is Windsor Jr heads, E303, EL GT headers, ported HO, T5 and 3.45 rear end.

I used to get 700 odd to a tank dead stock. That has plummetted to just under 200 around town and 350-400 if i nurse it on the highway. On my last trip to Wagga from Sydney, i needed fuel at Gundagai. When she was stock, i could get to wagga, cruise for a day or so, and get back to Gundagai before needing a refuel. Mind you i have a 3000stall, 3.9 diff gears and 32lb injectors. I cruise at 3000rpm at 115kph

Even though my car is a 6, it is untuned and drinks like a b**ch with or without aircon around town...so I would guess a tune will definitely help with economy by keeping AFR in the right position for max power...rather then an untuned car with through the roof AFRs and requiring more lead foot to do the same amount of work.

When I used to drive down to Ravensthorpe and back every 5 weeks for work, I found fuel economy to be identical whether AC was on or off. That was stock. I can't say I've notice a difference after getting it tuned either.

Maybe the load of the aircon is negligible on a V8 compared to a smaller motor which will have to work harder and where people see the difference with their aircon on.

Did you notice a difference between the 2 before you had the tune?

I think it would be cause aircon uses sweet FA in terms of power, especially when looked at as a percentage of actual power. Also, at cruise you only need probably less than 10kW to maintain speed on flat, I dont think adding another kW or two to this wouldnt affect the engine much,

The other thing is that torque is what gets us moving, and a V8 will make a heap more torque at cruise RPM/load compared to a 4cyl.

I like Scaffys train of thought that the air con is negligible on a V8 especially one with more power and tuned.

Good news for summer then. I can run it all day and not use any more fuel. Another win for the V8s.

^^Mine is the same Timmeh. Aircon has no effect on engine efficiency when running so it must have a negligable effect on V8s. Especially modified hi torque motors. I thought the damm thing wasnt working at 1st... then the cool air flowed and I was like SCORE!! :D

I get around 500km a tank with the blower, even with the 3.7 rear, just seems more effortless.

But if i nail it a few times, she does drink.

But saying that, i think tuned cars will benefit with economy, it will feed more fuel when the motor needs it compared to stock where it is fed it all the time to be on the safe side.

Maybe the underdrive pullies have an effect on the aircon, just a thought.

I used to work with a bloke who owned a brand spanker VP SS. He was scared of using the air-con because "it would use more petrol". A V8 isn't a 4cyl. Mine is on 24/7. Why leave it off and sweat rather than worry about fuel economy in a V8??

Here's something to think about. Did you e series windsor guys know that the ECU cuts out the air con when you flatten the gas pedal or if you overtake or flatten it up a hill? Perhaps it is only for those with Fairmonts and Fairlanes with climate control.

Good point Jeff under drives would reduce the loss to the air con as well.

V8s are great aren't they?

Sure are.
Unfortunately i still havent had a chance to run a complete tank of fuel through mine to check my economy, but from the $50 i throw in here and there i've been getting some good km's out of. Which is good considering the ute loves to be driven hard, or is it me that loves to drive the ute hard.......mmm...both.

The missus car has a KPM generic tune flash tune in it and the fuel economy has improved quite noticeabily. We do 75% around town driving around Wangara, Joondalup, Wanneroo, Malaga type areas often in peak our traffic an the other 25% has been driving down the freeway to Myaree, Kwinana etc and we have been averaging 460-500km to the tank. We also havent reset the avg l/p100km for about 5 tanks of fuel and its still sitting on 13.9 which isnt too bad cnsidering the occasional spirited driving i give it.
