Hey guys,

I am posting on behalf of a mate who owns an ED xr8.

The exhaust system on the car is completely stock atm. We are looking to put a complete system (extractors, highflo cats, mandrel catback) on the car.

Now my question is...
We will be getting pacemakers which have a 2 1/4" outlet diameter.
Is it better to get 2x 2 1/4" cats OR does everyone get 2x 2 1/2" cats and adapt them to the 2 1/4" extractor outlet then run 2x 2 1/2" pipes from the cats into a "Y" then 3 inch out with a 3" muffler??

or would it be better to run 2 1/4" out of extractors into 2 1/4" cats, then 2 1/4" out into a "Y" with 2 1/2" catback??

I have searched around and just cant find exactly the right info so im hoping someone can help us out!

thanks!
Damien

I'd definately just run 2 1/2" cats.

I would however reccomend getting a full twin 2 1/4" system instead of the single 2.5-3". Unless of course he is on a tight budget then the single system would have to be the go.

If he does go single 2.5" make sure its all mandrel bent pipework. IMO 3" single will be too big, whilst it will sound tuff it will not be practical for a mild windsor unless of course he has some pretty major mods in the pipeline.

The twin 2 1/4" gives an awesome note (obviously depending on muffler choice) and i believe gives the best results on a 5.0 windsor.

Where is he going to get the work done?

3" single would be a bit too big for a stock 5L and may even cause some annoying droning depending on muffler setup and cost of decent high flow cats are worth researching too.

I am running a single 3" exhaust from the cats back, its not too bad of a sound, single muffle and rear resonator helps alot.

Before that I had a single 2.5" with no rear resonator, I got pulled over twice in a week straight after I put the blower on, it was rediculous.

I'd be going twin 2 1/4" if the budget stretches. Twin 2 1/2" would be also good if he has serious plans down the track, either stroker or blown allout.

I would still like to see pics of an eb/ed sedan with a twin system from front to back. How is it possible to run twin pipes around the back of the diff???

Im sure someone will have pics on here.
Any decent, skilled and willing exhaust bloke will be able to do decent mandrel bent set-up.
My mate had twin 2 1/4" all the way to the rear bar on his EL 5.0L which isnt much different under there.

Did it have a crossover/balance pipe on it? Just curious as I would like to do this to mine.

Ive been looking into twin setup for a while now as i reckon it will sound better and deeper but as ALS008 said i would like some pics too as everyone i spoke to has said "NO WAY". Ive even been looking at the BA exhaust trying to somehow get that to fit as the problem is getting two pipes over the diff to fit might be difficult. The problem is the rear muffler resonator for a eb-ed there just not enough room where the spare tyre fits.

One version ive been contemplating

Twin 2.5" can be done but it is TIGHT... A good fabricator will be able to do it.

Twin 2.25 or 2.5" would be (is) my choice for a great V8 note without any droning. Muffler choice is critical too.

i just picked up my ef XR8 tonight, had a catback (for now) twin 2.5" system installed for $550. single muffler and "X" pipe. i will get some pics shortly and put a vid on utube. sounds alright, not too loud which is what i wanted (supprising with only 1 muffler on each side) but does seem to drone a bit at about 2000 rpm, although as it carbons up i hope it will calm down.

Ausman, sounds good mate. What mufflers were used?

I want to move over east, our speed limits are only 50km/h in built up areas, yours must be 90km/h ;)
