Its a place to rest your beer while your working on the motor. :D

Im sure its only there to keep the induction noise down, does look like a turd.

Yep your right schnoods, just a resonator for the intake.

Best to just discard of it and replace with something same size to blank it off, seen an AU tickford centre cap used once, was supposedly a perfect fit.
They only cause dramas when they get loose or crack causing unmetered air to get in and cause havoc to AFR's etc.

do a bit of google-ing, you'll find plenty of info about how you can 'tune' the size of the intake resonator to improve power at certain revs.
i wouldn't be taking it off.

It helps tune along the lines of reversion at low rpm ... Cuts down resonance....

Mate of mine saw an AU on the rollers make 18hp more with it on! He called me immediatly! I had an aerosol lid capping it perfectly, but put the turd straight back on.

I run the turd.
Think of it like a capacitor in an electrical system abosrbing sudden changes in airflow with stabs of the throttle.

Best to leave it on.

Mine was missing when I bought the Lane and had been capped off with a welsh plug as mentioned earlier. I've even designed and installed an LPG blow-off valve which worked for a while, but after a couple of backfires it was rooted, so the welsh plug is back in there now.
Perhaps I should be looking for one if it adds HP

mine kept coming loose all the time so i ditched it. Next day at work i found a nice piece off aluminium milled down then jumped on the lathe and turned up a nice plug, then got on a buffing wheel and polished it until it was nice and shiney, pluged it into the hole and run mastergasket around the edge. Look awesome
