Sons EF 5.0 auto if you go lightly (under half on the gas pedal) it runs fantastic but give it a boot full or just put your foot down to get going in traffic quick and its like its choking to death it becomes gutless and feels like someone just blocked off the air filter. It then wont rev over 4000 and holds the gear and wont change up unless you back off a bit. It seem to be engine related so far I replaced the fuel filter for him (fuel came out as black as sump oil) and checked that the fuel pressure reg holds suction and its still doing it but occasionally comes good for a day or so. I also reset the ecu.
It doesn't seem to misfire just severely holds back , wondering if coil maybe playing up. I also ran the motor through some paces in the dark ( revved it and loaded it in gear with brake) to see if there was any cross firing and couldn't see any.

Now its up to you guys for ideas before it gets booked in to the robbers at the workshop.
Any ideas appreciated maybe someones had these issues

Stock or modified? What work has it got done, and what size exhaust is on it?

the exhaust shouldn't be choking a stock 5L. Change the fuel filter and check the cats. I just downsized the exhaust on my AU from a single 3" to a single 2.5 (cost and the 3" was stuffed) and it chokes the 185kw AU at around 4900rpm.

Check Cats, MAF, TPS, 02 sensors, Fuel reg & vacuum hose to it...
Check thermostat, maybe in cold start ??
Then check ignition system, plugs, leads coil[s] etc...
Check battery connections, earth from body to motor..
Check for air leaks between maf and engine...

I had the same problem with my 5.0L El Fairmont. It ended being the exhaust was stuffed. Replaced it with a 2.5" and runs alot better.

I see your runing a K&N filter ???
Don't over oil them ...
Check MAF / air metter for contamination of oil from filter ??
The hot wire inside tends to get full of crud and NOT work correctly...
DON'T touch the wire. Just wash with white spirits etc...

Bingo. We were having the exact same problem with our EL XR8. Narrowed the problem down the the MAF after throwing the one from the NF in and the problem went away. Put the XR8 Maf in the NF and the same problem transferred to the NF. Cleaned it up with electronic contact cleaner. Seems to be as good as new now. They were putrid.

Don't really need to remove the torx screws. Just get a can of electrical contact cleaner, remove the airbox and spray it - you can access it this way well enough. If it's not the MAF I would think it would have to be blocked cats.

Don't mean to move off topic, but apart from being slightly restrictive up top how does the 2.5" perform compared to the 3". Better low end? Less Drone? Exhaust tone difference? Do you prefur the 3" or 2.5"?

More down low torque, can't comment on the drone as the 3" had one muffler, the 2.5 has a muffler and resonater. I'd like to get a 2.75" for a mix
