Ride: AU XR8 220 Manual

Hi all,

I have an EL series One XR8. i have fit a K&N panel and a full exhaust (twin pipes with high flow cats and EL GT extractors)

I am now looking for the next budget step (eventually i want to do exporer manifold and tb etc)

for the moment I was wondering if putting in a series 2 computer would be a good upgrade, i know these had a slightly more agressive tune based around the same exhaust that i now have. would this give any gains and would it cause any problems are the important questions i suppose?

thanks guys

I doubt there was a tune difference. The EL2 XR8 got the power difference from a better inlet manifold and better cam

AU maf and a tune on top of the above suggestions. I wouldn't bother with the ECU upgrade, finding one would be a mission in itself.

[Russell Ingall voice] RUBBISH!!

Cams were the same :)

I've entertained the idea for my car but I've had a look at the bin files for each and there are very few differences between a 165kw and 185kw although the 185kw one was a manual compared to the 165kw bin that was from an auto spec car.

S2 also got the bigger, non-choking MAF didnt it?

To upgrade the ECU you only need to purchase a J3 chip with the S2 tune on it and plug it in... done!

I ran a 185kw tune on a 165kw motor and it ran like s**t. I don't know exactly why, but the spark advance/map table I think is different and didn't run well.

No they still had a 55.
The chip will work only if the data locations are the same but frankly I wouldn't bother. Just do other things first.

as said dont bother with the series 2 computer. you would be better of saving ya money and looking for a explorer manifold and 65mm t/body, set of 24lb blue top injectors and an au maf and then a custom tune. you should see all that done for under $2000 and it will be about the best CHEAP ENGINE mods you will find.
it all depends on how much money you have to spend.
another good mod to make it get up and go a bit better is a diff ratio change, 3.7s or 3.9s make a good difference to an almost standard car.

^^^^ thats the exact for sale thread i had in mind.
still worth grabbing the manifold and t/body, then just have to find injectors and maf and grab a set of fly leads for the injectors and get her tuned.

if old mate here still had those injectors you could have had this done for around the $1500-$1600 mark, witch isnt too bad and it will make a good noticeable difference to your ride.

thanks for the info guys, sounds like the best plan is to slowly collect these bits as they come up. i know its hard to be exact but whta sort of money would i be looking at to get the car tuned once all this gear was on it?

if you can swap the manifold and t/body yourself and get the tunner to swap out the injectors and maf when you turn up to get it tuned you should see some change out of $2000 including parts and the tune.

roughly broken down.
manifold, t/body $500
injectors, maf $500
flyleads $250
tune $500-$600?? not real sure on this one but it would be somwhere around that.

that gives you a total of $1850 give or take a bit.
