Quick question guys - just out of curiosity is the EL 1998 (Manufactured 12/1997) is it IRS?

Not as far as I know.. I'm about 99% sure IRS wasn't introduced till the AUI, only in some models. e.g. AUI XR6 VCT, then across the board in AUII

Nah they're 100% not IRS.
Only came out in the AU's.

IRS (platypus) was introduced on the AU I. But it was only fitted standard to XR8, VCT XR6, fairmont ghia (and higher end luxury models), and all the T series. It was an option on all other models (not including utes).
EL was definatley not IRS.

if you're willing to cart around an extra 90kgs, the AU irs rear end will fit under an e series..

but thats about the only way an EL would have an irs bum.
