Ok guys, im new to this forum. I have been a ford man since i can remember. have owned fords since i kud drive, ranging from 302 xe to an El xr8, a pimped up Explorer and a BA GTP. Now im thinking of looking into a project car by the end of the year. Something a little different. So an El xr8 street machine looks on the cards.
Now i have heard it is expensive to get decent hp out of the lil windsor, especially with the crappy stock heads. Now on the other side im thinking of removing the efi and comp and fitting a thurst carby and internal mods and better heads with an msd ignition. So basically old school motor in a newer model.
My question is.. is this possible to do... or is it easier to keep her injected and mod her like every1 else. remembering this wud only be a weekend cruiser :) Any help wud be appriciated. Cheers.....

Yes you can change to carby but it wont be legal then.
Depends on the power you want to what mods you should do.

Oh ok that sucks, so is there a way to change the car to carby? Is it not legal because of emmision laws and the year of the car?? Damn.

Yep emissions dude.
There is alot you can do to your motor and still keep it injected, gtp40 heads, explorer manifold, maf, cam change, extractors, exhaust, cai and then get it tuned.
These are the usual mods and seem to work well, or if you have a bit of cash i would get some afr 165 heads because they have been tried and tested.
Maybe pm timmeh he has a warmed over el xr8 and could help you.

There are Carb style EFI setups that are still EFI, but look like carbs.

They can be the single four barrel style EFI throttle body with injectors drilled into , say a Funnel web manifold.

Or they can be complete units that house the injection.

Click on the right on "powerjection".

Its also found here, prices are US.

Yeh i thought about injection carb's. Seeing as i will def have to change the heads i might have to look into it a bit more. With the problem with emmisions i guess old school motor is out the question :) When i finally decide to go thru with the project i will have to speak to a few ppl about the best options and a best bang for buck. Thanks again guys.

For about $7k I got 260rwhp. Pretty mild but good enough for a weekend cruiser. Check the link in my sig for my build.

Also check out XH5LWEPNs build. He spent only a couple of grand more and got 300+ hp.

Have a look through the garage section. There is quite a few EL XR8 build there.

Might help to give you an idea.

If you want to make really big power, I'd suggest giving Mark's Workshop, up in York, a call. You've probably already seen his work. He's pushed quite a few big power 302/347 Windsors out his door.

Look here, it is my NOS 5.0 that with good comp would have made over 300rwkw. All up cost was close to 10g

...and take your chequebook. Big HP from a Windsor will not come cheap.

I know... He's the first person i got in contact with when I decided to start modding mine. After a quote for 12k for the motor and 10k for supercharger install, I decided against it.

I didn't read the first post properly. In my tiredness, I somehow got out of it that money was no option. :?

Why would you consider fitting a carb in the first place, the only way you save there is in the tuning?

Regardless of whether its carb'd or injected it will still cost $$$ to get it going
