Hey Guys,

I am currently looking at getting hold of a EL or even a EF XR8. I haven't owned a v8 and my old man's last v8 was a XC fairmont.

What are the things I should look for when purchasing one? Eg on the earlier sixes headgaskets are a biggy.

Most of the cars I have looked at have at least 150,000k's on the clock if not more so any tips and 'issues' to look for would be appreciated!

Cheers,

The 8's do seem to built pretty solidly, id be more looking at other mech. parts like trans (specially if auto) and diff/suspension, look for rust of ANY sorts and check condtion of things which wear out like exhausts, clutch if manual, check all electrics, check its got a cool cooling system and of course structural damage to the car, being 8-10yr old cars they have a great chance of being involved in SOME sort of accident, finding one thats not is not as easy as you would think.
Ensure it idles well and theres no weird sounds that you feel shouldnt be there rom engine, tapping or ticking..

Hope thats a small help.

'Big Kev' on here has a very nice EL XR8 for sale, and he's in Canberra.
Worth a look I'd say!

IMO a Windsor only has a couple of areas that I would have any concerns about: water pump and timing chain - both dependent on km's travelled. Other than those items, the Windsors seem to go forever.

Hoses would probably be heater/coolant hose.
They get s**t with age, not restricted to EL XR8's, or even Fords!!
Sprint did one too with only 100,000kms on it.
If one goes, I would replace them all as a safeguard, by no means a major 'problem'.
