G day I have to replace my electronic coil in my 351 Cleveland. I have another coil that is Echlin brand and the part number is GX80R I have been told its electronic but im not sure, I think it might be a "points" one. Its definitely for a 351 but Does anyone know if this is the right one or how can I tell if it is electronic.
Cheers.

electronic is wire wound coil.
smaller and have about 30% more punch.

std are oil filled round ones.
reliable and old.

there are 2 types with each.... resistor OR no resistor type.

This one is a round one, but the person at Autobarn assured me it was Electronic. It says on it "use with external resistor."

The one I have on it now that is stuffed, is like the smaller one and doesn't have an external resistor.

Did they give me the wrong info at Autobarn?

autobarn only sell rice now.

Use with resistor is basicly a 6volt coil with a reducing 10watt resistor.
It helps with starting as a 12volt coil has reduced performance when the car is cranking. (due to lower voltage)

Use with resistor explains why theres an R on the part.
Bosch carry on this part no. also.
IE: GT40R

Really from my own usage. an electronic coil/oil coil will work on either electronic or points dizzy. (u just need to get the right type)

Adding an inline resistor with an R rated coil will also work on either elec or points dizzy.

I assume the 'Electronic' stated on the coil is the design type and chemistry. (compared to the outdated and leaking oil type)

Not ONLY for electronic type distributors may suit both.

(someone correct me if they disagree)

I hope this helps.

Ok so it seems I could use it, but I run on straight gas so would this still be ok or will I get better performance from another coil. The engine is mostly stocker 351, just a few minor mods. Would I be better off taking it back and getting another coil?

Using a resistor type coil on electronic ignition is an old school way of getting a hi-performance spark, as such. Which type of elect. ign dizzy do you have,??? the pressed tin type reluctors??? or the cast metal type reluctors???? The pressed tin one were from XC's and the cast ones were from XD/XE. The XC's used a box to run the show, while the XD/XE had the module under a little cover on the side of the dizzy.
