hi all,
anyone ever experienced this before?
hissing/whistling from engine? in rythym with the idle? both when cold and normal temp.
maybe worn or loose belt/s?
EL 5L, pretty sure all belts are original, over 7 years old with 140km.

Only 1 belt on the engine. 7 years old... i'd replace it even if it wasnt the problem. Nasty business if that lets go and leaves you without power steering, water pump and alternator....

Might be noisy idler pulleys? Can get metal aftermarket replacements from repco... maybe bearings in water pump?

Everything running OK? Not a vacuum leak?

all is running very well yes.
only problem i have is an occasional rough idle, this comes and goes, i've slowly been replacing all things i can think off to overcome it.
what's it cost to replace the belt you think? just get on original from ford or somthing better aftermarket?
idler pulleys? easy to replace yourself? cost?

I had this problem and when i took it in my a service he replaced my belt because it had all cracks through it and was very close to cracking.

Turn the engine over manually, by the crank pulley while the car is in neutral. Then you can inspect the belt without having to pull it off. You might have to remove the termos tho.

From memory, I had ALL belts replaced on my EB
a while ago and the belt set cost about $60 (parts only).

EL a differrent kettle of fish.

Personally i would call ford up and get the measurement for the belt. It's a 6 rib belt.... somewhere around 2.8m long as a VERY rough guess. The belt will therefore be a 6pk2800 - or something along those lines (6pk is a 6rib belt, 2800 denotes length in mm but if its a Gates belt it may be in inches).

Then get in touch with CBC bearings or a similar company - the belt will be much cheaper as IIRC FoMoCo charge about $100. CBC charge about $50/60

Idler pulleys are very simple to change - one bolt (13mm?) holds each on. There is one in the top/middle of the engine - just above the water pump. There is also one on the bottom/left of the engine, sort of underneath the battery. They go for about $30 a piece IIRC.

The problem is that the bearings are part of the pulley and can become worn. Same deal with the pulley on the tensioner but you must change the entire tensioner unit if the pulley bearings fail. Cross that bridge if we come to it.

See page 6 for diagrams etc part# EP017 for the top idler pulley (flat), EP018 for the bottom left (ribbed).

Repco supply these.

But replace the belt first, then see how it goes.

Fingers crossed its not the water pump :) If it is, sprint auto can supply one for about $120... and hopefully you dont break any bolts off when changing it as that took my car off the road for 3 weeks ;)

wow i have the same problem. same car too! ford told me its the engine idler pulley.. which one, he said pulley i assumed ther was only one..
how wrong i was..

If i up and gets me one of these idler pulleys from repco, are they same size and so forth ? and is it as simple as undoing a bolt ? I cant really tell which one it is ?

EFNWIKD6, dont worry about invading thread, lol.

There are 3 idler pulleys on the EFI windsor engine. See this document:

Sepcifically, page 6. There are pulley diagrams on the right hand side of the page. Our engines are the 3rd one down.

There is the flat idler at the top - between alternator and power steering pump. Nuline part EP017 is a direct replacement for this - including the bearing (the bearings are what cause the noise when worn).

There is the ribbed idler at the bottom left - Nuline part EP018 is a direct replacement for this, including the bearing.

Both of these are held on by one bolt each. I think its a 13mm head. Very simple to replace yourself - simply remove the belt from the engine, undo the bolt holding the pulley on and remove. Replace with the new pulleys and put the belt back on.

You will also note a 3rd idler pulley - this is fitted to the automatic belt tensioner. The pulley is not really replacable - you need to replace the entire tensioner unit, which costs around $100 from ford spares. Mr Landau from these forums was providing a billet unit with replacable pulley on an exchange basis but i havent seen or heard from shane in a long time.

The tensioner is used to remove the belt - you will see a square hole in the left hand side of the tensioner unit, place a 3/8th socket in there and rotate the assembly to release tension from the belt. You'll see what i mean when you look at it.

if your still after a belt the number for it is a 6PK2685 i'm pretty sure the ones from ford are gates brand and going to CBC, Motion Industries, bearing wholesales, BSC, SKF, AWB(south aust),or Statewidebearing should only cost you around the $35 mark. If not PM me i might be able to help.

could i get the belt and then if need be the pulleys from a repco in nsw you think?
i'll replace that first, i can see very fine cracks all over it anyway.
what do i undo/loosen to give me enough slack to get the belt off? alternator?
I just need quote the part no. ovo616 quoted?

Yeah repco will be able to supply a gates belt i think but they are a little expensive for my liking. Most likely, they'll order in a belt from one of the places listed by ovo, mark it up and charge you for having it ordered in.

Yes, the part quoted by Ovo is the belt type you require - a 6pk2685. Its not really a part number, it denotes the number of ribs and the length of the belt in mm.

To loosen the belt, the engine has a special tensioner on it. Look under the alternator, there is a small idler pulley attached to a 'lobe' shaped piece of metal. This lobe is actually spring loaded - it automatically tensions the belt as it wears and stretches.

There is a square hole in the side of this lobe, which takes a 3/8inch socket driver (use a good driver for this job!). Place the driver into this hole and rotate the assembly upwards (pull the handle of the driver clockwise). This will relieve tension on the belt and allow you to remove it.

I promise it will make sense when you look at the tensioner unit on the engine.

To put the new belt on - reverse the procedure. Its a bit easier if you can get a mate to hold the tensioner up whilst you fit the belt.

i just picked up a bosch belt for $47 from a local place, it's a 6pk2690, but they said the 5mm extra length wont matter, no belt would be exactly the same length anyway i'd assume?
i'll give it a go tomorrow, hopefully wont take the whole weekend up. haha

Yeah 5mm difference will be fine mate. I have the same problem with blower belts, can never get the same one twice!!
