On the upper hand yes, you can use a Fairmont cluster in a XR, you are required to add the dimming resistor. Please read: documents.php?d=14 for all relevant information. You'll notice below the Fordmods banner, in the grayed out section a resources tab, a wealth of information there.

Be also careful with the wiring - preferably use your EF dash wiring harness - EL dash looms may have different connectors to the EF body harness.
