How bad is extreme heat on the cats? Last week when they were working on getting my idle right, the car was stationary at idle, with the occasional rev, for a considerable time. After smelling something burning, we looked under the car to see the cats glowing.

Could there be any negative effects as a result of this?

Yeah, they can melt and block up, depending on what sort of cats they are.
Would certainly explain your cars lack of power!

They're DeFilippos. I was told that it won't do them any harm, but there seems to be noise coming from that area under the car. I guess it won't take too much to unbolt them and check it out.

All that excess heat is from a blockage!!!

More than likely the inside of the cats have collapsed and need replacing. A set of highflows and you might be getting some more power back.

Definately!
I hope thats your problem dude, cause its an easy and cheap fix.
I can imagine how you'd be feeling spending all that money and getting something you're not happy with.
Good luck with it.

Could be blocked mufflers causing excessive heat in the Cat also.

The excessive heat in the cats was the result of a vacuum leak between egr and intake. A BIG ONE! As a result the O2 sensors would have been getting a lean reading, therefore dumping a s**t load of extra fuel. Well, so I was told anyways...

I hope it's something as easy as this!

Haha What a load of s**t!!!

More like it was leaning out like s**t from the vacuum leak.

Well actually the EEC would try to add more fuel to compensate for the excess air if it was in closed loop but it would likely set fault codes for adaptive rich limit reached depending on how long it was run like that. If the leak was substantial it's possible the eec could not add enough fuel and therefore the mix was still lean.
The cats could certainly be melted.

It would've been running for a day as it was.

Something to check out when I have the time...
