I looked at having it done myself but you need a special pulley puller to get the balancer off or you would bugger it even more so.

Just need a puller that grabs it via the holes in the balancer - i.e. a harmonic balancer puller. Not too expensive for anyone who wants to give it a crack (compared to the $300 worth of power steering pulley tools)

Yeah a normal tool will just pull the outer ring off.

Just a bit of an update - I spoke to Bayford Ford and they are not convinced it is the harmonic balancer as they are rarely stuffing up - they don't even keep them onsite. Anyway above that, they told me to remove the balancer and check for a cracked crank, by running the engine for a couple of minutes and see if the vibrations are still there. If they are, then possibly it is a cracked crank - BIG $$$. Other suggestions were loose torque converter bolts, locked torque converter or something to do with the trans drive plate.

Am removing the balancer this week to check crank etc. (Inside i'm quietly hoping it is cracked crank so we can go to the bank and get stroker under way)

I'll keep you posted on what we find and how many $50 notes it's gonna cost!!!!

Frankly i think it's fairly irresponsible for them to be pointing at a busted crank. Running engine with no balancer should be interesting... seeing as it's designed to balance the assembly... and without it you'll have no water pump, alternator etc.

Torque converter bolts are a possible solution, we looked at this on mine before noticing the rubber hanging from the balancer... can remove the cover at the back of the trans and have a look in there IIRC. You'd notice a dodgy lockup when you are driving and the box is doing its thang.

As for the balancer "rarely" stuffing up... this conflicts with a lot of what ive read on the mustang forums.. lol, a quote from one of my favourite forums "Wobbling is not good. Time to replace it. The stock balancer is a POS...." they have a lot of problems... also a couple of people here in this thread who have suffered a similar fate..

If they haven't had any problems with the Ford balancers then they obviously know very little. It is a common problem in fact, which happens often in the US with the mustangs.

When I was after my problem, I remember doing everything that people told me to do. Plugs, leads, dizzy cap + rotor, fuel filter etc etc.. the vibration was still there. I returned to my trusty forums and learned that the symptoms showed that it was indeed the balancer. Yet, no mechanic or FORD agreed. Had it replaced and stumped a lot of people..

In the end it's up to you, but I definitely won'tbe making that mistake again.

Probably has something to do with everyone buying Romac and Ross ballancers rather than the overpriced Ford units...

Hey Shane what is the price on the Romac and Ross balancers??

I can get employee price of the geniune ford balancer for the 8 for $135. I've decided not to get Ford to put it on so if the prices are a fair bit better I might aswell go aftermarket.

Even if the quality isn't that good, it only has to last a little while cause I'll be after another harmonic balancer for the stroker 347 :wink:

In NSW you can get it from High Performance World or Rocket Industries. Why not just get a good one now? Surely it can be used on the 347 anyway..

Thanks for that but I just don't have the $$$ at the moment to go for the good stuff. When it comes time for one for the stroker i'll lash out for something relatively decent.

Anyway the balancer has been replaced. The rubber seal was absolutely shagged, ended up being in pieces. The timing was out 6 or 7 degrees so that was corrected and hopefully now it is no longer running rich and a lot smoother.

Brad tells me the stroker has very different balancing requirements... so chances are one for the stock HO would be a throw away as soon as the stroker is built...

Thats what I thought, main reason being a larger rolling diametre to compensate for a bigger lift.
