Hey guys,

Im starting to look into how strong 351 windsor parts are. Example crank will take 500hp, rods 400hp.

Reason i ask is that a mate of mine is looking into a 351 windsor build and he has a limited budget. So we were thinking maybe prepare rods and crack eg stress relief them both and get the max reliable hp rating out of them then do the rest of the engine with forged pistons and maybe get a set of AFR heads.

He can get a set of AFR185cnc heads pretty cheap and thought he would build the engine around that.

Any help will be greatly appreciated guys

Thanks in advance

I know holley built a blown 351W a few years ago, ran stock internals and made a lazy 700hp. from what i have read, done right these blocks will handle 1000hp, but a mrginal above that.

The main bearing journals on a 351W are 3". They are huge, nice strong cranks.

The stock stuff can handle over 500hp but make sure the rods are nicely forged. I've seen some rods where the little end is a bit off which means it's awfully thin on one side.
Being a 3" main you don't want to spend lotsa time over 6500rpm...of course you can make around 550hp N/A without going over 6500.
You can run 302 pistons on the stock rods with a 3.85" Scat crank for 392ci too....good low cost stroker.
If you're worried about the stock rods use 302C rods and machine a smidge off the top of the pistons. I did this in my last 351W that's now in an EB.

Well I dunno. I bought a crank and 302 pistons years ago when the dollar was worse than it is even now and it cost me $1100 for the Scat 9000 series crank and about $450 for some sealed power forged pistons with a big dish with rings. I just resized the stock rods and used ARP bolts.
Check out some of the local parts shops for a price.
