Hey, i was told that the legal noise level for a car was 100db, my car is 101db in the cab, and winds the meter off the scale just about when put at the rear of the car, can anyone tell me if 100db is correct and how they judge it from, like 10 feet away or at the back of the car.

any help appreciated
cheers

all the qld transport guide says is
exhaust systems must continue to comply with
relevant legislation or Australian Design Rules for
vehicle noise.

I'm not sure where they measure it from, but i thought it was around 90-94 dB. My guess would be that, its measured from around the car, probably from behind and about 20 feet away???

they put the microphone a feet away from the tip of the exhaust and reved it at around 2500-3000rpm.

89dB for a post 1986 model car, measured at a 45 degree angle 1 metre away at a bit over 3000 rpm... it's something like that in vic.

in nsw its 90db for cars made after 1983, 96db for cars made before then. I got defected by the cops and got tested at 98db at the workshop and thats with a 3inch straight thru droner.

i got pulled over a couple of months ago durning work i decided to use my car to go from one place to another at work, got pulled over for a road worthy if i had of put my new sticker i would not have been pull over, but i did so copper had a look around my car asked me that is it ok to get the epa to have a look so i said yea ok, while epa was checking car and setting device up coppa asked me why i had a couple of set of car plates in my car he must of thought i stole them or something but anyway they were for work epa told me that i was just under the limit, all i got was a sports exhaust havent even got extractors yet, so yeah thank good i was let off with the reg sticker been a week later since it was paid and not put on told them i was getting new window done today

For a modified vehicle in NSW for an engineers report you must have tested to the relevant ADR. Depends what vehicle type and year model as to which ADR must be complied with. 28/00 specifies a driveby test and 28/01 a driveby and a stationary noise test. (Cant remember the driveby limits off the top of my head), but it is 90dB for the stationary for cars that required 28/01.

If I got pulled up for noise based on a stationary noise test and my vehicle only required a driveby I would challenge them on this point.
