OK, so who out there knows about their serpentine belts?

Im just trying to get a feel for how they are measured/coded.

For example, I use a 6PK2515 (all accessories less p/s pump) and a 6PK1615 (power steering, supercharger and associated idlers) on my engine...

So, im guessing the 6PK relates to the fact they are 6-rib belts. And the 2515/1615 would be the length of the belt in mm?

So - who knows their stuff? Teach... impart.... tell me where to get em cheap

Was running 2 belts. Currently without p/s and supercharger, lol.

OK, so you're familiar with the 5.0 now - picture the p/s pump pulley removed and put on backwards - it now sits out about an inch from the other pulleys. Picture a second pulley on the harmonic balancer, sitting about an inch in front of the other pulleys... now picture a supercharger with 2 idlers sitting about 1 inch out from other pulleys...

So the 6pk1615 goes from the 2nd crank pulley.... up over the p/s and into the supercharger/idler assembly.

The 6pk 2515 goes around everything except the p/s pump... it goes down from the altenator, under the top idler and straight onto the air con.

So... anyone know where to get gates belts from? Repco looking at 90 bucks for a dayco 1615... thought i might shop around.

Hahaha - isnt it amazing what you can find on the internet.

Turns out the belt im looking for was OEM gear on a 1993 Chevy Corvette LT1 with.... you guessed it.... a 5.7L EFI V8.

I was told to check with truck and farm equipment supliers as they can get most of the belts and are normally fairly cheap. I personally haven't checked around though, only know the CAPA prices which are fairly rich. I am amazed that your belt went that quickly, from what I am told they shoudl last 5+ years! Was there an apparent reason for the break or did it just go for no reason?

Gday grant.

To be totally honest, i havent had a good look to see if there was a cause (12+ hour days last week and no time at all over the easter weekend). There is nothing which suggests the pulleys/bearings are damaged, they all turn freely (i.e. not siezed) and there is no play in them.

I'll get the spirit level on there and make sure everything is still lined up. It appears that one rib has been sliced off the whole way around the belt which suggests an alignment issue to me. Seems like the mustang guys chew through a few belts... but they're all a little bit crazy IMO, lol.

mm strange you may have got a bit of dirt on one of the pulleys or even on of the pulley edges are a bit too sharp???

as for the belt , my auto store has a cool measuring device u brign the belt in and they put it on the ruller so to speak and tell u what belt u need!

Martin, give CBC (Consolidated Bearing Company) a ring. They have just about any belt you could ever want, have branches across Adelaide, and supply Gates belts.
There are a few other industrial belt suppliers in Adelaide, one near JMS comes to mind but can't remember the name...

Darin.
