I have a el xr8.

I already have fitted to car cold air intake, el gt computer, manifold and injectors and genie extractors with sports dual system.

I want to fit gt40 heads, and may be add a mild cam!!! Will probably get the heads ported and polished before they go on the car once i get them!!!

Now to my question: will the standard elgt computer be able to adapt to the mods or will it restrict power, or be unable to run the car all together!!!
What are the limitations as i would like to go as far as i can without changing to aftermarket computer!!!

Also are there chips available and are they worth the money, and where would you get em from????

I'd say with a ELGT engine with cold air intake, exhaust and cam that the ELGT ECU will be able to handle that and a little bit more.

Hell I reckon an EL XR8 ECU could handle that.

The factory V8 EEC can handle a lot of engine mods without any issues, there are actually plenty of guys in the US running 10sec cars with unmodified EEC's. I take it that you have also fitted the EL GT MAF, otherwise you may already have AF ratio issues. IMO dont bother with a chip on the V8's, the factory programing is quite good and because it is a MAF based system it will adapt to the mods very well, the money can be spent better elsewhere.

Also I would look at a set of GT40P's instead of the GT40's, as I said in the other post they flow better in stock form (really dont need porting unless you want to go for 200+rwkw) and they would also be far easier to find.

The GT computer and maf are calibrated different to other EEC computers...
Just like Cobra Mustang, they are specific for that model....

in answer to your question, the gt's eecv computer will handle the mods ur talking about, and more.. id upgrade the heads over porting them tho.. gt40p's preferably, coz they common/cheap/betterthanwhatyoucouldhavewithporting

The computer will adapt just fine as long as the MAF is correct for the injectors.
As for holding the engine back, you may get a bit more out of it by having someone fiddle with the ignition timing by way of a chip, but you would probably be better of spending that type of money ($1300-$1500) elsewhere on your engine (better heads or something) for the difference it would make.

Correct calibrated and bigger maf with std eec would be just as good...

As soon as you start playing around with cams (and other assorted bits), the optimal ignition timing advance curve will change. Thats something the ecu cant adapt to (or change) on its own. The best you can do is change the overall advance starting point (by giving the dizzy a twist) with out a chip.
I definately dont think the gains from a custom a chip are worth what they cost, unless the engine is off its tree and you've run out of bits to spend your money on. Even then if that were the case a Haltech or alike would be the go.

Thanks for the replies, yes i will be going for a set of gt40p heads!!

The engine has 169 rwkw as it is now, and i would like to get a bit more out of it, as i think the standard heads are holding it back from kicking a***, as i feel the the rest of the intake system is good for more than the power it is making at the moment!!!

As it is a manual i would like to put a bit of a cam into it when i change the heads to bring it to life.

Would love to give the turbo boys a bit of a scare some time, as it looks like a standard xr8, that has been lowered!!! And thats how i like it, standard everything till you put your foot down, and then all hell breaks loose!!!!!Thats my plan.....

Cant really call a EL XR8 a sleeper  unless its doing 9-10 second 1/4 miles.

The standard eec will handle a cam duration of up to 235 degrees with help of a chip anything over that and youll have troubles.Maf and t/b no worries as long as you dont go to stupid.
