This is a bit of a long shot, but hopefully someone may have experienced the same before.

My car drives fine and when I give it herbs, it will pull hard to about 4500 - 5000 but it then loses power and the exhaust note seems to get a bit harsher.

When I pulled off the Freeway tonight onto North Beach Rd, I gave it some s**t in first where it did what I've just described and banged it into 2nd. Looking in the rear view, I could see a fair bit of smoke in the lights of the cars behind me.

I'm assuming it could be a fuel problem, but am not sure. It's not blowing any smoke driving normally, and when I revved the s**t out of it in the garage there was no sign of anything.

Do the symptoms sound familiar to anyone?

Dunno about fuel problem but more like spark problem causing incorrect burning of fuel or as EBXR8380 said incorrect mixtures due to vacuum leak etc.
Cats are still suspicious from previous issues i remember.....

YEP could be simple as coolant in EGR nr throttle body leaking .. Being that it clears at higher rpm ???
Could be 1001 things....

Yeah, I figured as much...

I just cleaned the maf yesterday which was pretty grubby.

I went out to pick the gf up just now and noticed that if I ease the throttle on, it'll rev out no worries. If I flat-foot it, that's when it s**t itself...

Willl have to check plugs and leads tomorrow.

I still haven't looked at the cats Jeff. I was told they were all good, but never got to see them. When I can find somewhere to do it, I'll get them off and have a look.

Exactly the same symptoms as when i had a dirty MAF. Cleaned in some white spirits and all was sweet. If it was real grubby as you say it may have damaged it.

Well, in comparison to normal when I've cleaned it before. I just put it down to the air filter being cleaned and oiled not so long ago. Maybe when cleaning it I've damaged it, but was very gentle with cotton tip and contact cleaner. Or could be one of the many other things... crap

75mm with stock electrics I think.

I'm going to pull the plugs today and check them out to see how they're faring.

Can anyone tell me what they should be gapped to?

Jeff, are you no longer using your MSD coil? If not, what are the chances of chucking it in after doing the plugs to see if it's the stock coil causing me problems. BPT still haven't contacted me to let me know my replacement coil is in that I've been waiting for since December, along with my lead.

I'd imagine they'd require to be gapped to about 1.1.

Unfortunately mate the coil is sold and waiting to be packaged up and sent over east to another forum member. So i dont really want to put it into use again. I do have another std coil here that came off my ute though if that'll help. I'd be giving BPT a ring to get that coil if you've paid for it, if not give Dave @ A1 a ring and get an MSD one or a Crane one to suit.

No worries mate. I'll give you a buzz regarding the coil a bit later if I need to. Am off now to check out the plugs. Once I see the state of them I may be back on to get more info. Will probably give Dave a buzz at some stage soon.

I'd get that coil sorted eh.

Maybe buy a bosch coil for a few bucks and see if it makes a difference.

I would be getting up BPT for a replacement, Not your fault that you were supplied a faulty coil, should be reimbursed maybe and go for a msd one perhaps.

Well, well, well... I just pulled the plugs out.

Numbers 4 and 6 were gapped to 1.1mm while all the others ranged from 2 - 2.5mm! Another episode to the saga to add to the pissedness.

I cleaned them all up and gapped them to 1.1mm and what a difference it's made, especially at idle. My problem of power loss is gone and it feels to be running smoother all round. I've only driven it around the block a couple of times, so will get a better idea as to the difference it's made after a day or 2s driving. Hopefully it'll be all good for Monday night.

AU V8 plugs come out with a gap of 1.2mm (close enough). I gapped them to 1.0mm and it made a substancial difference to idle quality. Replacing oxygen sensors is a good thing to do also if the plugs look a bit suspect.
Thge 220 when in a poor state of tune can be mistaken for running on 7 cylinders.
