Hey guys, i have had a lot of cars on LPG inc a worked 351 Clevo in the XD.
I just bought an AU Fairlane 5.0 and trying to work out what system i want to put on, it seems the most affordable is the Impco but i don't want to run it.
To anyone with a 5.0 on LPG could you tell me what setups you have and how well they work... power economy etc.

There is the injected LPG and also Gas Research, but at $3,000 + i'm not prepaired to spend that much, this is an everyday family car.

I'm interested in going gas on the EF as well, I plan on keeping my rocket for a while so it will pay off, what I would like to know is if it's possible to use the fuel injectors, I will be going straight gas when I do it, and would think using the injectors would be a better option, I haven't seen a gas setup EFI V8 in person, anyone got any pics.

Yeah the direct injected LPG is awesome from what i'm told.
My mate is doing an install on a BA 4.0 (they haven't got the V8 injection right at this point) at the moment, but $3500 is a lot of money.
I'm trying to find a cheaper alternative that works well.
I've got a near brand new Impco 425 mixer sitting in the shed which will save me some bucks on install, but i want to go through all options before throwing Impco on it.

gas injection is only available for newer models unfortunately. gas research is the best alternative.

I'll take some tomorrow, it's a stock looking black AU Fairlane, it's pretty clean but has a cpl of small scratches and scrapes, but for $10k i wasn't going to complain.

I've got LPG on my modified 5.0L... Unfortunately for you it's the Impco 225 setup so if you're dead against Impco then I've got nothing for you!! If you're not set, then I'll be at the drag day on saturday if you want to see the results...

Most of my mods (explorer manifold, GT40P's) are off an AU so the comparison should be worthwhile...

Ahhhh yep you have the Impco 425 with the L type convertor DJ.
What did you pay for the dials mate? And are they good quality?

Sounds good EF302, how does it perform compared to petrol, and how many k's are you getting to a tank?

As i said earlier i have a 425 mixer, and also have an E type convertor off my XD, it's a bit bigger than the L type so might be hard to fit in.

Good to get a cpl of opinions from people who are actually running them though... i may even setup the Impco for now and just change the under bonnet setup later.

I've only just got it back after a couple of dramas from the mods... At this stage it feels great on both fuels, maybe a little gruntier on petrol, but I guess the drags will be the first real test...

Does LPG shorten the life of the engine?... what sort of power loss should u expect when converting it to gas...

What are the For and against....

Im just curious, as i am thinking about putting my 5.0L Fairmont onto gas!

But if its not good for the motor, or shortens the life... i will stay with the expensive stuff!

How does it affect modification potential... i plan to stroke it in the future.. and possibly even supercharge it...

Well if a taxi is any indication then you shouldn't worry about lifespan.
As far as performance goes, there are systems out there but it's costly, trust me if i had the cash i wouldn't be here asking, i'd fork out and buy the goods.

The against, the space the tank takes up in the boot, and of course that bit of extra power from the weight of the system lol.

Mine's done 260,000 kms so engine longevity isn't a problem if you maintain it properly, same as any fuel really. Stereotypically, power loss is quoted at around 10-15% in a dual fuel application, although a straight LPG setup can make more power than petrol due to LPG's higher octane rating...

I say stereotypically 10-15% because the only time I had my car dynoed for both fuels, I had a massive drop of 3  rwkw (yes three whole killer watts  !!) when I switched to LPG, and that was with a pathetically undersized gas setup completely unsuited for a 5 litre V8. Since the modifications I haven't had a chance to get a dyno run in, but I'll be posting up results as soon as I get a chance. Hopefully in the next few weeks.

Oh i see, so if you use the 'duel fuel' setup, u lose a bit more power?... is this because they have to tune it to 2 different fuels?

Oh, does LPG affect the sound of the engine at all? lol, i love the V8 sound and i dont want to make it sound like s**t..

Ok put it this way... my car has done 450,000km (ex limo, always on the road) using that "crappy" lpg system but i must admit i got no major problems at all..

EF SVO my idling problem was due to a blown hose.. i just got the report off my old man now.. the system was fitted on the car when it was on around 80,000.

i got a 0-100 in 8.5 sec on gas and 7.9 on petty (gteck metre), i got no mods at all so i was pretty impressed by the way my engine runs.. maybe it was the last rebuild, i dunno but she goes pretty good on both gas n petty

sunday will tell all! i will run a couple runs on LPG and a couple on petty..

my lsd is totally f**k so i dont think im gonna run her on stockies.. better stick to the goodyear F1ss
