185s are too big for a 5.0L (or at least at the max end) in my opinion. A high velocity 165 to 175 head is a better option and the choices are endless including Edelbrock, Dart, AFR, Trickflow etc. You can pick up second hand alloys for $1500 to $1800 but you almost have to be Jony-on-the-spot. Going to a bigger heads usually means 2.02"+ intake valves which means potential clearance problems, piston notching etc. GT40's are great because they flow well for stock heads and are cheap compared to most alloys. A little home clean up of the exhaust ports will see benefits and compared to the E7 heads as fitted to the e-series the GT40Ps are a decent step forward. For the most part you kinda get what you pay for when it comes to heads, just don't assume bigger is better.

That said, Waggin's heads are a great price - go nice on a stroker.

Thats a fair call. The 185's were purchased to go on a 347.

XR8Chic runs AFR185 on a 5.0L with a Crane 2030 and an Edelbrock performer for 205RWKW.. not a bad effort for such a baby cam.

I have ED Fairmont - Just took off GT40P's & 1.72 YT RR's ex T3 stroker.
I am just bolting on Edelbrock Performer RPM's #60259 on Performer 5.0 Manifold and 5.0L bottom. These have 2.02 intake valves. Pistons are ACL Race Series cast type #8MKRY9302S They have a large relief cut into them. With 170cc intake runner should not lose too much bottom end. These heads do not have exhaust crossover for EGR port. Paid $1730 brand new in box. Am changing springs to CompCams.
Just need to shave them to increase comp ratio because of the aluminium heads.
Also trouble finding 1.7RR to fit under FMS rocker covers. May need to go to 1.65 adjustable. Running a Crane 2031 cam. (#444225). Diff is 3.7 LSD. 70mm BBK TB, 75mm ProM MAF, 24lb inj and Tweecer RT.
Should be up and going next week or so.

Richie.

That's strange... I've never had a problem with 1.72 RRs under FMS covers. Have you tried fitting the thicker cork gaskets?

Could help if you smooth the lump in the exhaust port.
I was going to port mine to within an inch of their lives to flow around 560HP but was going to cost around a grand. Ended up with RPM's.
