Hey guys, just come back from a drive up to queensland.
Took the 'ol el xr8, but one concern...

I replaced the old radiator with a new heavy duty 2 core (equivalent to 3 core) radiator and thermostat before i left to qld..

On the freeway, the temperature was perfect.. Would NEVER go above 1/4 when driving at a constant high speed (more than 100km/h)..

But when it comes to slowing down, start stop etc, it rises to about 2/3 and sometimes even 3/4!! And im not even driving her hard!

This cant be normal can it? Especially with all the new gear??

its isnt what u would call normall, but if it only goes up a little then goes back down it will be fine, what does it do on a hot day and when u are giving it a bit?

It screams of an airflow problem, check the both thermo fans are operating.

I agree with paulhowes, seems there isn't enough air getting through the radiator at low speed. Are the fans plugged back in?

The only time the temperature would go down to 1/4 was on freeway driving. Anything else like traffic, slow, start/stop, thrashing, etc would cause it to rise to around 3/4!! :?

Ive had the thermos tested by an auto electrician. Both fans work when they should, so no problems there.

What else could this be? Its really buggin me!

Water pump maybe? Sounds like pressure in the system is dropping when you slow down which leads to the temperature getting higher.

Thats the only thing i havent replaced so far, the water pump! lol
Could the water pump be the problem?? Ie. do the symptoms show that it could be the pump?

Funny, mine is doing exactly the same, i have replaced all parts of the cooloing system except the small fiddly hoses. so that is top and bottom rad hoses, hoses to/from thermostat, thermostat, radiator, and water pump. Mine is similar but ony goes to half in city stop start driving, on the highway, it doesnt even get to the l in normal

I've said it before, say it again.. If it is within 'normal' then it's normal! Only when it starts to get to n or higher should you worry. This happens especially when you have air con on during a hot day.

Mine sometimes touches 'n' on hot days in traffic, and thats without the aircon on! (i hardly ever use it)..

Even though its within the 'normal' range, u cant tell me that thats normal now can u?

Doesn't the temp guage only cover like 5-10 degrees?

Not too normal.. Unfortunately coolant systems are just another 'maintenance' thing. Perhaps extra sand from the block happened to block up the radiator? If you had it replaced recently, go back to the person who did it all for you. He should be more than willing to help..
