My engine is a little noisy on startup, and for around 2-5 mins into driving.
What is the best oil to combat this?? Thicker or thinner??
I think ford recommends 15/40...motor has done 160,00k's

Thinner oil in thse cold months to get good circulation.. I'd use 15/ 50....

Use whatever the book says. I run 5/30 in mine as per the specs.

A lot of people say to run thicker oil as the motor ages. If the motor is maintained well then I dont really think that is necessary. Thicker oil will quieten down a noisy tappet, but will not solve your startup noise (the oil wont even be up there that quick if you go thicker)

I thought thinner oil, so it gets up the pushrods, tappets quicker?

Either way, close to 15/ 40 should be fine.

As EBXR8380 stated thinner oil in the colder months of the year seems to work best.

Its the lower visc number that matters in cold conditions...

Hate to spoil the party but what happens in the lab should stay in the lab IMO. From my experience the lifters (after 120,000 hard kilometres) seem to bleed down excesivelly overnight especialy when thin oil is being used.
I personaly recommend along with some of the more senior windsor devowtees like to use penrite 15/60 semi synthetic. Try it and tell me what U think.

I use HPR 15 Penrite (semi-synth) in the TE, its had about 130K of abusive driving. Running a thin oil made all sorts of horrible noises (thanks dealerships!).

Thats what I use and top up with synthetic {Sin 15} to 7 ltrs due to big sump...
If the lifters are rattly its NOT the oil .. Its excessive clearance...
My lifters have done all up 180,000 and good as new...
I have stud mount rockers and cam with high lift and still reasonably quiet... Crap Ford valve spings don't help !!! Even the Tickfords are no better..

Valve guides are stuffed in mine, I know this for a fact, I pull up at the lights and it sounds like a sewing machine!! :(

it doesnt get quite so cold over here, but my burnout car with a 302 in her loves the thicker oil, never smokes, loses level or makes any noise. The engine is carburetted, and im using 20/50

Maybe I'm wrong-but isn't HPR 15 a relatively thin oil?
