Fellow Fordfreaks,

I changed my oil and oil filter last week and had been noticing that my oil pressure needle is jumping to its maximum reading (past 7) while cruising but then goes back midway when you stop. I had used Shell Helix plus 15W50 and Ford AFL-1 filter.

Has anyone had this kind of problem before?
Am I using wrong grade of Oil?

Thanks you all in advance.

I use the same oil, and noticed the same thing after my last change, thought it might have been a dodgy sender, but it wasn't.

I used to get a similar reading before I changed my oil a couple of months ago. It never went over maybe 6, but now at idle it is nearly at the bottom....Very strange. I guess if you use the grade as specified in the manual then you can't go wrong.

Mine used to do the same in my fairlane. Crusing at constant speed and it goes right up to 7 (sometimes into the red zone) Then give it a rev and it will fall back to about half way. Quite sure its an electrical problem.

If the wire comes off the sender (even momentarily) or has a dirty connection you will get a very high reading. Mine reads high every now and then and I just give the terminal a clean.

Its a pretty slow moving gauge anyway. what is the oil pressure supposed to be? Is it constant across the rpm range or goes it increase with rpm. In my brothers VL the oil pressure goes up with the revs but in the fairlane it stays pretty much constant. My lanes a 6 by the way, maybe the 8's have a different oiling system.
