Hi all,
I've just had a top end rebuild on my ELXR8.
GT40P heads, Explorer manifolds ported and matched, ELGT MAF, 24lb injectors, 1.72 adjustable roller rockers, 65mm t/b, AU 220kw Cam, etc, usual top end as done by many.

I know have a problem with idle which I've never had before.

Starts fine when cold or warm, but is revving at approx 1100rpm for 2-3 mins before it drops to approx 800rpm, at this time it can be put in gear (auto btw) and then has a drop to about 500rpm but doesn't stall, comes close though.

If I put it in gear while the revs are high, it will surge and stall.

Any ideas? I'm guessing an obvious problem?

Alternator not coping with extra power maybe?
TPS not set right?
Timing not set right?
etc etc

Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated.

Cheers.

Check TPS and re set isc ??
Check for inlet leaks??
Double check PCV back of inlet ??
Check coolant and inlet temp sensers...

ELGT maf will have issues BTW with 24's and std EEC...They have there own callibration..
Possibly too rich ????

the GT MAF transfer is quite different to the std one, as are the fuel and ISC tables/maps. When I put 24lb/hr injectors in to mine, it took a fair bit to get it to run correctly, and I cheated and stuck a barstardised ELGT/6DFC bin on my J3 chip.

As EBXR says but the MAF and 24's may be the root cause and/or combined with a poor TPS adjustment.
If vac leaks and TPS are checked and not an issue then pull the 24's and stick the 19's back in.
BTW isn't the 220 cam just a HO cam?

Not sure mate? I thought all the HO gear stopped at EL series 1?

Nope S2's still had 55mm MAF and 19's but then you should know...didn't you take them off to fit the 24's and 70mm MAF?

The 220kw cam is different to the normal HO, but smaller than the 200kw camshaft.

IIRC HO camshaft is 266/266 0.444" lift on 117 LCA

What's an IAT sensor Jeff?

TPS for the ECU is on top of the T/B?
TPS for the AUTO is where?

Thanks.

To confirm, when checking for voltage;

Have ignition on "reds"

Set Meter at DC20.

Pin both the Green and Black wires

Meter pins going red to green and black to black?

Don't use the chassis for example, for your earth as it gives a slightly higher reading? So the TPS black wire is to be used as the earth?

Hi guy's, just an update and hopefully welcome news to those of you who have idle and stalling issues.

After checking the voltages on the EEC and AUTO T.P.S's, I found they were set a 1.5 & 1.1, (part throttle) I got them down to 0.97 & 0.96 and it's a lot better, no more stalling issues.

Only problem I have left is, if while in neutral I give the engine a rev and take my foot straight off the gas, the engine will stall, feels like there is nothing to catch the rpms from free falling when they get under the 750 where it idles at.

I know this isn't a huge issue, but I never had this trouble before and I'm worried about stalling if I had to brake hard.

Does this point to the TPS EEC sensor not being quote right as apposed to the ISC?

I have the AU 220kw cam in with the rest of the AU gear (see start of this thread) so it's a little lumpy but the revs hold fairly still.

Cheers.

Do you have a custom tune to go with those mods?

I've got the same mods as you and my AFRs were lean as hell. 15:1 and worse. Refer to my EL XR8 build, I've got the first dyno sheet from before the custom tune. After the tune I got 12:5 : 1 and it was all good. I also got a timing kit that was advanced 3 degrees on the cam.

I had similar problem initially when I tried to run the ELGT ECU with 19lb and 24lb injectors. It wouldn't idle it would just drop off. If I held it with my foot then it would drive but I was idling with the pedal.

Hi Pete,

Mine hasn't been tuned yet, we're waiting on a phenolic spacer to put the 1.72 adjustables rockers in, then it's going on the dyno.

So after getting your ratios right, you had no more idle problems?
