What sorta compression it running? also is the throttle shut when your turning it off

Wouldnt think its the igniton system, unless the wiring for it is wrong and its still getting power for spark while you turn it off.

Does it stop running straight away, say if you remove the coil lead?

I wouldnt advance the iginition timing to stop running on, if its caused by timing you will need to retard it.
Try turning it off in gear, or stall it out if its manual.

The idle speed should be adjusted on throttle idle plunger [solenoid], not the idle screw.. So when key is turned off .. The butterfly closes completely..
If it doesn't have idle plunger [whatever its called?] Then try to set idle as low as you can ..
Idle mixture as lean as possible also...
May pay to check heat range of plugs ??
Try one range colder...

id first check for fuel trickling in down the throats of the carby whilst running, could be high float level or sticky needle n seat. if not check idle mixture screws, could be rich. base mixture setting 1 1/2 turns out. once set try turning the main idle speed screw down to lower the idle to around 600-750rpm.

MY XC 351 USED TO RUN ON ITS QUITE WORKED 10:1 KICKER PISTONS,270 CAM ETC AND IT WAS DETONATING IN THE MANIFOLD. HAVE A BAKERLITE CARBY SPACER(ONE INCH) AND ALLOY INTAKE (PERFORMER) NOW AND IVE SET THE TIMING TO 8 DEGREES AT AROUND 700RPM( 32DEGREES AT 3000) WITH A 600 HOLLEY(1850)WITH NO.66 JETS,STANDARD XD DIZZY, AND IT GOES WICKED WITH NO MORE RUNNING ON. IS IT HARD TO START HOT?

If it pings ?? Check timing.. 90% of ping is timing...
Check the counterweight springs in dissy ??
They often break or go weak with age...
Tend to over advance at lower rpm...
We used two marks on ballancer .. One was for idle as normal.. The other mark was at 38* where max advance was at say?? 3000 rpm...
This way we were 100% sure to get timing right..
After all 3000 rpm is where the engine works and makes its power... Thats where the tune should be right!! Idle to a point doesn't matter..
Something is glowing in your combustion chambers to have it run on.. Carbon build up ? Or plugs being heat range too hot ??
Lowering rpm adle should help...
If carbon build up ?? Try a water injection system??
This will keep cylinders nice and clean...
Can be made from old washer bottle and small garden fogger jet.....
