Ok, ive just dropped my v8 back into my NC but had the dizzy out and am trying to do the timing. Car is running rough like its running on 4 cylinders... anyway. Went to put the car into self test with the two pins (top and bottom left) and it did nothing...made no difference to idle. Now, is there a way to do timing without putting it into self test? I understand that it should be 30deg when in self test, someone told me 8deg without self test, is that right?

30* +/- 2* whilst in self test mode. Have you got the dizzy in correctly ie, its not a tooth out? I set my timing by ear without putting it in self test mode after I did my cam. Couldn't use the timing light.

Ive also got this problem, what are we doing wrong? The revs dont pick up at all, it barely idles!

When you say it does nothing have you got a timing light on it and have you done this within two minutes of shorting the pins?

Just an update on this. Turns out it is going into self test mode, it just wont raise the idle because the ISC has an issue somewhere
